To be honest and with due respect to protests , the protest should be focused on what govt can and should do :
- Strong law on violence against doctors with assured justice like with have here in UK and Australia too
- Permission to have Hosp security. Here in UK , we have a team of strong burly muscular guys in towering black uniforms with walkie talkies . At the slightest doubt the nurse calls the Hosp exchange to immediately dispatch the security. They reach in no time and encircle the trouble maker . From there is between them and police . No ifs and but’s . No one can intervene therafter . Law takes its course . Trouble makers are shit scared here .
- Nothing more from govt !!
- They are demanding an airport like security to Hosp entry !! Seriously? Is it possible ti stop relatives with a serious patient to scan and search them ??? Who made this demand ???
_Other things need to be done by Hosp themselves which they are not doing
- All corridors need to be fully lighted ( motion sensors if required ). Fully functional always . Here in our Hosp , even at night all departments are fully lit ( common areas) even at night . Security costs money . That the Hosp and govt needs to cough up . Hosp need to maintain the lighting
- Why have these 24-36 Hour shifts?? Rota management is Hosp job . Mandatory rest should be provided . There is nothing wrong in European working hours directive of 40-48 hour working week with mandated rests . We have a 4 and 3 day night shifts each of 12.5 hours . The Mon-Thu team is off from Fri-Sun. The Fri-Sun team ( 3 day team ) is off from Mon-Wed.
Don’t require govt for this . We are to blame. Indian scenario can have a different shift setting . This was just an example . - A large room with comfortable sofas and recliners with tea , coffee , computer and dishwasher with fridge and microwave are nothing which a Hosp cannot provide for doctors.
- Food dispenser kiosks ( like at airports ) with some sandwich, juices etc can be placed . Or a night time functional canteen with some fresh food .
There is more but the Hosp can do a lot .
Above all , after all the protests die down our senior facujty ( including senior residents) will get down to the default setting of high headedness and treating each other poorly , the worst being treated are the junior resudents abd interns . Why do we abuse , be sarcastic , rude , dismissive to our juniors ? Wasn’t this the very thing we detested when we were young ??? We need to be good abd respectful to our juniors .
Today , if you ask me , I will not pay the mandatory so called respect to many of my old teachers simply because the way they treated us. Tact hasn’t been my forte and slavishly following tradition also not .
Please let us reflect ourselves also before giving rebuttals to my post .
Happy to engage on this .
