Born into an era when medical infrastructure in India was still developing, Dr. Malviya’s journey is one of perseverance, innovation, and dedication to patient care. Dr. Malviya’s medical career began with a significant tenure at the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) Medical Services, where he served from 1964 to 1993. Over these nearly three decades, he rose through the ranks, starting as a Senior Medical Officer (SMO) and later being promoted to Deputy Chief Medical Officer (Dy. CMO). His long association with ONGC provided him with a robust platform to hone his skills and serve a diverse workforce and their families in Dehradun, a city that, at the time, lacked advanced medical facilities.

In 1974, Dr. Malviya took a pivotal step in his career by pursuing a Diploma in Medical Radiology and Electrology (DMRE) from Agra. This qualification marked a turning point, as he returned to Dehradun as the city’s first qualified radiologist—a distinction that underscored his pioneering spirit. With this expertise, he began working with X-ray machines at the ONGC Hospital, enhancing diagnostic capabilities in an era when such technology was still a rarity in the region.

Dr. Malviya’s commitment to advancing medical diagnostics did not stop there. In 1983, he achieved a milestone that would transform healthcare in Uttarakhand: he introduced the state’s first ultrasound machine at the ONGC Hospital in Dehradun. This groundbreaking development came after he underwent specialized training in ultrasonography at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. The installation of the ultrasound machine revolutionized diagnostic practices in the region, offering non-invasive imaging that was previously unavailable. As the first practitioner to bring this technology to Uttarakhand, Dr. Malviya played a key role in elevating the standard of medical care and setting a precedent for future advancements.

After retiring from ONGC in 1993, Dr. Malviya’s passion for his craft and his desire to serve the community persisted. He continued practicing ultrasonography, working at two or three nursing homes in Dehradun and even operating his own ultrasound machine near Doon Hospital. For six to seven years post-retirement, he remained a vital part of the local healthcare ecosystem, providing diagnostic services to patients and supporting smaller healthcare facilities with his expertise. However, after this period of active practice, Dr. Malviya chose to step back from the demands of professional life. Since then, he has focused on maintaining his health and embracing a well-deserved phase of relaxation and enjoyment, reflecting on a career well-spent.

Dr. Malviya’s personal life is as fulfilling as his professional one. He is a proud father to three daughters, all of whom are married and have established successful careers, a testament to the values of education and ambition he instilled in his family. Among his extended family, his local son-in-law, Dr. R.B. Kalia, stands out as a notable figure. Dr. Kalia is a respected Professor of Orthopedics at AIIMS Rishikesh, one of India’s premier medical institutions, further strengthening the family’s connection to the medical field.

Now in his later years, Dr. Udai Malviya enjoys a life enriched by the satisfaction of his contributions to medicine and the joy of a close-knit family.
