Bhanu Duggal

Prof. (Dr.) Bhanu Duggal is a distinguished Indian cardiologist, educator, researcher, and academic leader whose career blends top-tier clinical expertise with a passion for teaching, innovation, and integrative health approaches.

Born around 1970 (currently 56 years old as of 2026), she pursued her foundational medical education at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. She earned her MBBS in 1989, followed by an MD in General Medicine in 1993, and then specialized further with a DM in Cardiology in 1996 from the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune.

Her professional journey reflects a deep commitment to advancing cardiac care in India. Early in her career, she built strong credentials in interventional cardiology, including expertise in cardiac angiography (CAG), percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), and stent utilization. She has been recognized internationally, including through an ICMR fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in the USA and associations with institutions like Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health (noted in some profiles as a “Loan Scholar” or similar advanced exposure program).

From 2014 to 2017, she served as Professor and Head of the Department of Cardiology at Grant Medical College and Sir Jamshedjee Jeejeebhoy Group of Hospitals in Mumbai, where she led clinical services, training, and research. In September 2017, she took on the pivotal role of Professor and Head of the Department of Cardiology at AIIMS Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. Under her leadership, the department grew significantly—starting DM Cardiology training programs, expanding services like echocardiography and tele-consultations (she conducted AIIMS Rishikesh’s first tele-consult in cardiology in 2019), and fostering research in areas like plaque vulnerability, spotty calcification, and functional capacity assessments in cardiac patients.

Beyond conventional cardiology, Prof. Duggal has championed the integration of yoga and traditional practices with modern medicine. Her work explores how yoga-based interventions (often in collaboration with AYUSH initiatives and institutions like SVYASA University) can complement evidence-based treatments for heart health—reflecting a holistic vision that bridges ancient wisdom and contemporary science.

With over 100 publications, citations in high-impact journals, and a Google Scholar footprint highlighting her contributions to interventional cardiology and cardiovascular diagnostics, she is respected as both a clinician who saves lives daily and a thinker pushing boundaries in cardiac research.

In a landmark achievement announced in early February 2026 by Lt. Gen. Gurmit Singh (Retd.), Governor of Uttarakhand (who serves as Chancellor), Prof. Bhanu Duggal was appointed Vice-Chancellor of Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Uttarakhand Medical Education University (HNBUMU) in Dehradun. This state medical university oversees medical education across Uttarakhand, and her five-year term (or until age 70, whichever is earlier) is seen as a transformative step. Her global experience, administrative track record, and innovative mindset are expected to elevate research, academic standards, discipline, and integrative health education—directly benefiting thousands of medical students, faculty, and the region’s healthcare ecosystem.

In essence, Prof. Duggal embodies the modern Indian physician-scholar: rigorous in science, compassionate in practice, forward-thinking in leadership, and open to blending East and West for better health outcomes. Her story is one of quiet perseverance, excellence in a demanding field, and now, guiding the next generation of healers in Uttarakhand and beyond. A true inspiration! 🎉
