Medical negligence

The WHO recommends 1 doctor per 1000 population. It is, at best, 1:2000 in a few States and over 1:5000 in many others. In a country with a burgeoning population and a rising disease burden, young people are getting disenchanted with the Medical Profession and choosing others.Doctors are overworked, underpaid, harassed, threatened, assaulted and subject to unjustified litigation. Rs. 3 lakhs for a railway death, Rs. 5 lakhs for a plane crash, peanuts for a road accident or death of a soldier sacrificing his life for his country and upto Rs. 1 crore for a dedicated effort by a doctor to save the patient or cure his disease!Upto lakhs in fees for lawyers and rulings by Judges overturned after months and even years by Higher Courts but no case of negligence against the Lawyer or the Judge. In future, even if they import doctors, there will be few takers as many foreign bodies including the BMJ have condemned the conditions for Medical Professionals in India. Punish negligence when proved beyond doubt, curb overcharging for medical equipment but you can’t regulate the other charges by Corporate Hospitals. You willingly pay upto 30,000 per day for a 5 Star Hotel but you shout ‘Robbery!’ for a 6000 rupee per day charge from a Hospital which includes meals and check ups. You can’t even provide protection in the form of the MPA. If this situation prevails, doctors will suffer but the people of India will suffer much more.
