Dr. Roop Sidana: A Life Dedicated to Healing Minds

In the early 1980s, a young psychiatrist stepped off a bus in the dusty town of Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, carrying little more than a suitcase and a big dream. Mental health was barely spoken about in those days. People called it “paagalpan” (madness) and whispered about it behind closed doors.

Dr. Roop Sidana looked around at the quiet streets and thought, “This is where I’m needed.”

Dr. Roop Sidana: A Life Dedicated to Healing Minds

In the dusty streets of Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, back in the early 1980s, a young psychiatrist stepped off a bus with little more than a stethoscope, a fierce dream, and a quiet determination. Mental illness was still spoken of in whispers — something to be hidden, feared, or blamed on spirits. But Dr. Roop Sidana had a different vision.

“I didn’t come here to sit in a big-city clinic,” he later recalled with a gentle smile. “I came because I could see the suffering in people’s eyes — mothers who hadn’t slept in weeks, young men drowning in addiction, families breaking apart in silence. Someone had to tell them: You are not alone, and this is treatable.

The Making of a Healer

Born with a curious mind and a compassionate heart, Roop Sidana completed his MBBS from the prestigious Christian Medical College, Ludhiana in 1978. The call of the human mind pulled him deeper. He went on to pursue his MD in Psychiatry at PGIMER, Chandigarh — one of India’s finest institutes — and graduated in 1983 with the Silver Medal for academic excellence.

Even then, his teachers noticed something special. While others focused purely on textbooks, young Dr. Sidana spent hours talking to patients, listening to their stories, understanding their pain beyond symptoms.

He trained at NIMHANS Bengaluru and the WHO Collaborating Centre, soaking up the latest knowledge. But his heart kept pulling him back to the underserved heartlands of Rajasthan.

Building Hope from Scratch

Returning to Sri Ganganagar, Dr. Sidana took over and transformed the Tek Chand Sidana Memorial Psychiatric Hospital and De-addiction Centre. In those early days, resources were scarce and acceptance even scarcer.

One evening, an elderly farmer brought his son, who had been chained at home for months due to severe psychosis. The father, tears in his eyes, said, “Doctor sahib, log kehte hain paagal ho gaya hai… bas dua karwa rahe the.”

Dr. Sidana placed a hand on the man’s shoulder and replied softly, “Nahin uncle, yeh bimari hai, jaise bukhar ya sugar. Hum isko theek kar sakte hain. Bas vishwas rakho.” (“No uncle, this is an illness, just like fever or diabetes. We can treat it. Just have faith.”)

That simple act of empathy marked the beginning of a revolution in the region. Over the next four decades, the hospital became a beacon of hope for patients from Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and beyond.

Fighting Stigma with Stories

Dr. Sidana knew medicine alone wasn’t enough. He became a warrior against stigma.

He wrote simple booklets in Hindi and English about depression, schizophrenia, and addiction. He gave radio talks, newspaper interviews, community lectures, and even organized nukkad natak (street plays) in villages so that ordinary people could understand mental health in their own language.

Once, after a street play on suicide prevention, a young woman approached him hesitantly. “Doctor sahab, maine aaj pehli baar samjha ki meri udaasi bimari hai… main akeli nahi hoon.” (“Doctor, today for the first time I understood that my sadness is an illness… I’m not alone.”)

He smiled and said, “Beta, yeh sabse badi jeet hai. Ab baat karo, hum saath mein ladenge.” (“This is the biggest victory. Now speak up — we’ll fight it together.”)

A Pioneer Who Brought New Hope

Never content with the status quo, Dr. Sidana introduced repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) — a groundbreaking, non-invasive treatment — making him one of the early adopters in India. He treated mood disorders, psychosis, addiction, and child psychiatric issues with both cutting-edge science and deep humanity.

As Clinical Director of Prerna De-addiction Centre, he championed dignity in recovery. He served as President of the Indian Psychiatric Society (North Zone) and Rajasthan State Branch, mentoring countless young psychiatrists and pushing for better policies.

A Legacy Written in Compassion

Even after 43 remarkable years, Dr. Roop Sidana still sees patients with the same warmth. His charitable services have helped thousands who could never afford quality care. Through NGOs and community work, he has fought for the rights and social inclusion of people living with mental illness.

When asked what keeps him going after four decades, he pauses, eyes twinkling with quiet emotion:

“Har roz jab koi patient theek hokar ghar jaata hai… jab maa mujhe haath chhookar ashirwad deti hai… tab lagta hai zindagi ka maqsad poora ho raha hai. Yeh sirf career nahi, mission hai.”

(“Every day, when a patient goes home healed… when a mother touches my hand in blessing… that’s when I feel life’s purpose is being fulfilled. This isn’t just a career — it’s a mission.”)

Dr. Roop Sidana’s story is more than a medical biography. It is a deeply human tale of courage, empathy, and quiet revolution — of a man who chose to bring light to the darkest corners of the mind, one patient, one conversation, and one act of kindness at a time.

A true healer, not just of minds, but of hearts and communities.

“I didn’t come here to build a big hospital first,” he later recalled with a gentle smile. “I came to bring hope to people who had none.”

Born with a natural curiosity about the human mind, Dr. Sidana completed his MBBS from the prestigious Christian Medical College, Ludhiana in 1978. He then pursued his MD
