Dr. Pravin Togadia: From Cancer Surgeon to Hindu Nationalist Leader

Born on December 12, 1956, in Sajantimba village (Amreli district, Gujarat), Pravin Togadia came from a modest Gujarati Patel farming family. At the age of 10, his family moved to Ahmedabad, where his life took a decisive turn. Young Pravin joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) early, drawn to its discipline and ideology of Hindu unity.

A Doctor with a Mission

Togadia pursued medicine with dedication. He earned his MBBS and then specialized with an MS in surgical oncology (cancer surgery). For about 14 years, he practised as a cancer surgeon in Ahmedabad. He even established his own Dhanvantri Hospital, where he treated patients battling one of humanity’s toughest diseases.

Imagine a busy operating theatre: Dr. Togadia, focused and precise, fighting to save lives one surgery at a time. Colleagues and patients knew him as a skilled doctor committed to service. Yet, alongside healing bodies, a deeper calling stirred within him — protecting and uniting Hindu society, which he saw as under threat.

Rise in VHP and Hindu Activism

In 1983, Togadia was drafted into the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP). He rose rapidly, eventually becoming its International Working President. Known for his fiery oratory and organizational skills, he played a prominent role in major Hindu mobilization campaigns, including the Ram Janmabhoomi movement.

He often addressed crowds with passion: “We are not just fighting for a temple; we are fighting for the dignity and security of Hindus in their own land.” His speeches combined medical precision with emotional intensity, urging Hindus to organize, assert their cultural identity, and counter what he viewed as appeasement politics.

Togadia worked closely for years with figures like Narendra Modi in Gujarat but later had a public falling out with the Sangh Parivar and the BJP leadership. In 2018, after tensions over VHP leadership, he left the organization and founded the Antarashtriya Hindu Parishad (AHP), continuing his advocacy for Hindu causes.

Later Years and Legacy

Even after stepping back from active surgery, Dr. Togadia maintained his identity as a doctor at heart. He has spoken about returning to medical service and continues to champion issues like Hindu unity, temple construction, and what he calls “Hindu polity” — ensuring policies benefit the majority community while providing food, education, and healthcare for all.

He is married and has two children (a son and a daughter). Supporters view him as a “dharma-rakshak” (protector of faith) — a tireless warrior who left a comfortable medical career for public life. Critics see him as polarizing. Regardless, his journey from a village boy to a national figure reflects deep conviction.

Dr. Pravin Togadia’s life illustrates the intersection of professional service and ideological commitment. From the operating table to massive public rallies, he has consistently advocated for what he believes strengthens Hindu society and India’s cultural roots.

His story continues to inspire (and divide) opinions across the country. If you’d like more details on specific events, his views, or a particular phase of his life, let me know!
