Dr P K Gupta was born and brought up in what was a small hill town of Dehradun, now the capital of Uttarakhand, in the foothills of the Himalayas. His early education was in St. Thomas High School, followed by his selection in AFMC, Maulana Azad Medical College, and CPMT, and graduating with MBBS from the third-oldest medical college in India, the famous SN Medical College, Agra. He pursued his residency at the same institute, leading to an MD in Psychological Medicine. Thereafter, he worked as a Consultant at the ‘Deemag and Chest Clinic’ in his native town for the last thirty-five years. His achievements included being a pioneer in the field of psychological medicine and setting up the first EEG laboratory in Uttarakhand. His clinic is equipped with lung-function tests (spirometry), ECG, X-ray, central oxygen supply, a day indoor, an optical store, an auto-refractometer, EEG, pathology, ECT, biofeedback, and a pharmacy. He is a psychiatrist and epileptologist, and is interested in English and Hindi literature. He is an avid reader, cricketer, and middle-distance runner, and regularly writes in newspapers and blogs. He is living with his wife, Ranjana, an optician by profession, and his daughter Rohini, a pathologist, and son Manvendra, a pulmonologist in Dehradun, spending time between attending to patients, reading, and writing.
