Hii respected seniors..My name is Narendranath and I am doing my MD final year at Manipal..I just want to share my experience about the state of corporate hospitals in India..My wife was primi at 26 weeks last month and was diagnosed to have PIH..Within one week she progressed to severe precclampsia and 20days back when I was in OT intubating a case,I got a call from gynaecologist saying that her pregnancy should be terminated..My wife is also a doctor and she works at a rural hospital. The gynaecologist where my wife had all her antenatal checkups suggested to take her to a higher centre as she was only 27 weeks and baby cant be resuscitated in their setup..So the same day we went to a very big n famous mother and child corporate hospital..2hrs after waiting in the opd block HR has come to us telling abt the packages they offer..My wife asked whether she could meet the gynaecologist and HR replied first u need to pick the options and doctor will meet u after we allot u the room..So we picked one and got admitted..Half an hr the doctor came and saw my wife..Nurse came and checked her BP and she told it was 130/70 mm of Hg..She told us we will wait and act according to symptoms.. Nyt again the nurse came to check BP and again told it was 130/70 mm of Hg..I got doubt and checked ..I got a reading of 180/110 mm of Hg..Next day mng gynaecologist came for rounds and told her abt BP..She tried to convince me that its not an issue and decreasing her BP will not help her much..Meanwhile the investigations have come and she had 4+ proteinuria..She again told me that we can wait as my wife had no imminent signs..2 days after staying in hospital by early mng 4:30 am she had severe epigastric pain..I ran and informed the duty doctor and asked her to inform the gynaecologist..She was shifted to HDU and her BP was 210/140 mm Hg..She was IV.Pantoprazole, 20mg of IV labetalol and loading dose of Mgso4..Gynaecologist came at around 9:30am and told me that she would terminate pregnancy..I accepted for that and they did an emergency lscs..BP was not controlled intraoperatively and even 4hrs after lscs BP was very high..I requested them a lot to control BP and they told me they had their own protocols and they have a lot of cases..Almost 4 hrs after lscs, I was called by the duty doctor telling that she threw a seizure and became unconscious.. I had a fight with the duty doctor and asked her to start on labetalol infusion..They did not bother to check her GCS or pupils..I checked her pupils which were pinpoint and she had signs of raised ICP..I asked them to start Iv.Mannitol..After 2hrs the gynaecologist came and she told me in a cool manner that it was expected and me being a doctor should accept the situation and allow them to do their own treatment.. She even told me not to worry and my wife will be fine within 24hrs..She even advised me not to come and dstrb in view of infection control..24hrs after I went to see my wife and she was almost in a vegetative state..Gynaecologist told me that she landed in HELLP syndrome and she requires a good ICU care which they dont have and asked me to take her immediately.. I was shocked by her words and my eyes were in tears..I asked her why she didnot call for a physician or a neurologist the day before itself..She told me that she thought my wife would recover but didnot..
I immediately called for ambulance with ventilator and shifted her Manipal branch at that city..MRI was done and she was found to have severe cerebral edema and anterior variant of PRES..After 14 days in ICU my wife opened her eyes and 2 days after that she started talking small words..She could not recognize me nor she could remember that she was a pregnant and she gave birth to a baby..Neurologist told me that it was a very poorly controlled hypertension and she might takes months to recover.,Worst part she might have some residual cognitive impairment too..
We in the recent times saw a lot of assaults on doctors..Yeah I too raised my voice against that..But bcoz of some negligent doctors like these, our profession is loosing reputation.. People who treated doctors like God before are now trying to kill doctors..We as the representatives of present generation should take this responsibility on our shoulders and try to bring the old glory..
