New Delhi: Providing the current total of all medical seats and institutes in the country, the Health Ministry has released a complete breakup pointing out a significant increase in the seat matrix across all states/UTs.

According to the data shared by the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar during a recent question hour held at Rajya Sabha, there are a total of 101,043 MBBS, 45,471 MD, MS and PG Diploma, 4,997 DM and MCh seats available across 660 medical colleges in India.

MoS Health further mentioned that there is an increase of 71% in Medical Colleges from 387 before 2014 to 660 as of now. Further, there is an increase of 97% in MBBS seats from 51,348 before 2014 to 101,043 as of now, out of which 52,778 are available in Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) and 48,265 seats are available in Private Medical Colleges.

In addition, there is an increase of 110% in PG and SS seats from a combined total of 31,185 before 2014 to 65,335 as of now, which includes, 13,246 Diplomate of National Board (DNB) / Fellowship of National Board (FNB) PG seats and 1621 PG seats in College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPS).

In December 2022, the aggregate stood at 96,077 MBBS and 49,790 Postgraduate medical seats. Since then, the Government has increased the number of medical colleges and subsequently increased MBBS as well as the PG medical seats.

Last month, the Ministry as well as the National Medical Commission (NMC) issued separate statements on the total of medical seats and approved/ recognised institutes. However, the document referred to by Dr Pawar on 14th March in the parliament comprehensively gives the current aggregate of MBBS and PG medical seats at all government as well as private medical colleges. The same is summarised below for all NEET and NEET PG candidates this academic year.

MBBS Seats in India:

Altogether, 101,043 MBBS seats are available at present in over 660 medical colleges in the country, of which, 52,778 are in 360 GMCs and 48,265 are in 300 private institutes.

The top states having the maximum number of MBBS seats are Tamil Nadu with the highest number of 11,225 seats, followed by Karnataka with 11,020 seats, Maharashtra with 10,295 and Uttar Pradesh with 9,253 MBBS seats.

Next are the states of Telangana with 7,415 seats followed by Gujarat with 6,600, Andhra Pradesh with 5,635, Rajasthan with 5075, West Bengal with 4,825, Kerala with 4,605, and Madhya Pradesh with 4,180 MBBS seats for students this year.

The list further drops down to 2,565 seats in Bihar, 2,325 in Odisha, 1,945 in Chhattisgarh, 1,835 in Haryana, 1,630 in Puducherry, 1,750 in Punjab, 1,497 in Delhi and 1,450 in Assam.

Uttarakhand comes next on the list with 1,150 MBBS seats, followed by Jammu & Kashmir with 1,147 seats, Jharkhand with 980, and Himachal Pradesh with 920 seats.

Manipur has 525 MBBS seats at its medical colleges while Tripura has 225 seats followed by 180 seats in Goa, and 177 in Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

Chandigarh, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh have 150 MBBS seats each. Andaman and Nicobar Isalnds has 114 and Mzoram has 100 MBBS setas at presnet. Meghalaya has the least number of only 50 MBBS seats as of now.

MD, MS, PG Diploma seats in India:

As per the Health Ministry’s breakup, a total of 45,471 MD, MS and PG Diploma seats are available at present of which 26,936 seats are in GMCs and 18,535 are in private medical colleges.

The maximum number of MD, MS and PG Diploma seats in the state of Karnataka with 5,545 seats followed by Maharashtra with 5,383 and Tamil Nadu with 4,263 seats.

The state of Uttar Pradesh has 3,522 seats followed by 2,666 in Andhra Pradesh, 2,650 in Rajasthan, 2,548 in Telangana, 2,357 in Gujarat, and 2,212 in Delhi.

The number drops down to 1,856 in MP, 1,792 in West Bengal, 1,625 in Kerala, 1,230 in Uttrakhand, 1,090 in Bihar, 1,064 in Odisha, 885 in Puducherry, 723 in Haryana, 718 in Punjab, 683 in Assam, 569 in JnK, 525 in Chhattisgarh, 473 in Chandigarh, 335 in Himachal Pradesh, 236 in Manipur and 252 in Jharkhand.

The last number of seats are in Goa having 117, Tripura having 85, Sikkim and Meghalaya with 34 and 33 MD, MS, and PG Diploma seats respectively.

DM, MCh seats in India:

The data attached below shows that a total of 4,997 DM and MCh seats are available in India currently. Of these, 3,909 are in government institutes and 1,088 are in self-financing medical colleges.

Delhi tops this list with an aggregate of 703 Super Speciality seats. The state of Tamil Nadu follows the number with 672 seats along with 581 seats in Uttrakhand and 461 in Karnataka.

Next is Maharashtra with 382 seats for candidates seeking super specialisation. Rajasthan has 330 SS seats followed by UP with 273, Kerala with 264, and WB with 206 seats.

The list goes down to 175 in Telangana, 150 in Andhra Pradesh, 139 in Odisha, 126 in Gujarat, 105 in Chandigarh, 79 in MP, 60 in Bihar, 58 in Puducherry, 55 in Assam, 42 in JnK, 37 in Chhattisgarh and 36 in Punjab.

The least number of DM, and MCh seats are in the states of Haryana with 22 seats, Goa with 14, Jharkhand with 11, Himachal with 7, Manipur with 5 and Meghalaya having only 4 seats for candidates.

The states of Sikkim and Tripura have no Super Speciality seats at their medical colleges.

CPS, DNB and FNB seats in India:

According to the Health Ministry, there are 1,621 seats allocated for candidates seeking degrees from the College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPS). Meanwhile, for DNB and FNB aspirants, there are 13,246 seats.

Medical Colleges in India:

Altogether, 660 Medical colleges are currently operational in India, of which, 360 are government-run and 300 are private medical colleges.

As per the data, the maximum number of medical colleges are in the state of Tamil Nadu having 72 institutes. Tamil Nadu also has the highest number of MBBS seats for candidates at present.

The top states list further includes Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka both with 67 institutes and Maharashtra with 64 medical colleges.

Next are the states of Telangana having 46, Gujarat 37, and West Bengal and Kerala both have 33 medical colleges. 32 medical colleges are in Andhra Pradesh, 30 are in Rajasthan.

The list drops down to 25 medical colleges in Madhya Pradesh, 20 in Bihar, 15 in Odisha, 14 in Chhattisgarh, 13 in Haryana, 12 in both Assam and Punjab, 10 in Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir, and 9 in both Jharkhand and Puducherry.

Uttrakhand and Himachal Pradesh both have 8 medical colleges each. While Manipur has 4 medical colleges, Tripura has 2.

There is only 1 medical college in the states/UT of Sikkim, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Goa, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

The stakeholders are advised to note that this data for 2023-24 may vary on granting of permission by NMC for new Colleges/ increase of seats and on withdrawal of permission for Colleges/seats.

Furthermore, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar had informed regarding the CSS Scheme and the medical colleges’ status.

“Under the CSS for strengthening/ upgradation of existing State Government/ Central Government Medical Colleges to increase the number of PG seats, support has been provided to the State of Telangana for increase of 511 PG seats in 09 Medical Colleges. Further, support has been provided to the State of Telangana under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) for upgradation of 03 Medical Colleges by setting up of Super Specialty Blocks. Establishment of AIIMS, Bibinagar has also been approved under PMSSY,” she said.

She further mentioned some of the measures/steps taken by the Government to augment the medical education facilities and to improve the medical standards in the country as follows: –

i. Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for establishment of new medical college by upgrading district/ referral hospital under which 157 new medical colleges have been approved, out of which 97 are already functional.

ii. CSS for strengthening/ upgradation of existing State Government/ Central Government Medical Colleges to increase the number of MBBS (UG) and PG seats. Under these Schemes support has been provided for increase of 4677 MBBS seats in 77 colleges, 4058 PG seats in Phase-I in 72 colleges and 3858 PG seats in Phase-II in 60 colleges in the country.

iii. Under “Upgradation of Government Medical Colleges by construction of Super Specialty Blocks” of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) scheme, a total of 75 projects have been approved, of which 60 projects are complete.

iv. Under the Central Sector Scheme for setting up of new AIIMS, 22 AIIMS have been approved. Undergraduate courses have started in 19 of these.

v. Relaxation in the norms for setting up of Medical College in terms of requirement for faculty, staff, bed strength and other infrastructure.

vi. DNB qualification has been recognized for appointment as teaching faculty to take care of shortage of faculty.

vii. Enhancement of age limit for appointment/ extension/ re-employment against posts of teachers/dean/principal/ director in medical colleges upto 70 years.
