Dr. Neena Bohra is a veteran psychiatrist, treating pateints from all walks of life for 45 years. She has been teaching post graduates since 1983 and has headed the psychiatry department at some of the leading government hospitals like RML in Delhi. Dr. Bohra has served as secretary, Central Mental Health Authority, Government Of India and national consultant to WHO in psychiatry.
In the close-knit world of Indian psychiatry, where long hours, emotional burdens, and relentless dedication often define the profession, some lights shine not from the stage but from the quiet strength beside it. Mrs. Neena Neelam Bohra was one such radiant presence — a charming, ever-smiling pillar whose warmth and unwavering support helped nurture an entire fraternity alongside her beloved husband, the late Shri (Dr.) Neelam Kumar Bohra.

Born into a life that would intertwine deeply with mental health care, Neena ji stood as the graceful counterpart to one of Delhi’s respected psychiatrists. While Dr. Bohra built a legacy through clinical excellence, teaching, and leadership — including at places like Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals and through initiatives like the Delhi Academy of Practicing Psychiatrists — Neena ji strengthened the human fabric that held it all together. Together, they created not just a home, but a lasting foundation for the Indian Association of Private Psychiatry (IAPP). Their vision, commitment, and selfless service helped the organization grow into a vibrant platform for private practitioners across the country.
A Daughter-in-Law of Rajasthan
She had a special sparkle for those who shared her husband’s Rajasthani roots. Dr. Neelam Kumar Bohra’s alma mater was Jaipur Medical College, while many colleagues, like the narrator, hailed from Udaipur. This created a delightful familial bond. Neena ji became “Bhabhi” to many — a term of affectionate respect.
Whenever paths crossed at conferences or gatherings, a familiar teasing ritual would unfold. With a mischievous glint in her eye and that trademark soft-spoken charm, she would be greeted with: “Arre Bhabhi, don’t forget you’re a daughter-in-law of Rajasthan! You have to keep that desert spirit alive — full of warmth and resilience!”
She would laugh lightly, her ever-present smile widening, and reply in her gentle voice, “Haan beta, how can I forget? With all of you reminding me every time!” That easy banter, filled with laughter and belonging, turned professional meetings into family reunions.
Moments That Stay Forever
Her presence at award ceremonies carried special meaning. On 5th October 2025, one colleague had the profound honor of receiving the prestigious N.K. Bohra Oration Award from her hands — a moment etched in memory, heavy with emotion and gratitude. Years earlier, in 2019 at the IAPP Annual Conference in Mumbai, the same hands — alongside those of Shri Neelam Bohra — presented the Late Dr. Amit Bohra Oration Award.59

This award held deep personal significance: it was instituted by the Bohra couple in loving memory of their son, Dr. Amit Bohra. In the midst of their own grief, they chose to channel love into legacy — supporting excellence and inspiration in the field their family held dear. Neena ji stood there with quiet dignity, her grace turning moments of recognition into something profoundly moving.
“Those occasions remain among my most treasured memories,” the recipient later reflected. “Her hands were steady, her smile warm, and in that brief interaction, one felt not just honored professionally, but embraced personally.”
A Life of Quiet Strength
Neena ji was debonair yet approachable, soft-spoken yet impactful. Colleagues remember her as the steady presence behind the scenes — offering encouragement, hosting gatherings with warmth, and embodying the compassion that psychiatry itself seeks to spread. Even as her husband’s health challenges came (he passed in 2020), and later her own, she carried herself with remarkable poise.
Dr. Nimesh Desai’s call last week, sharing news of her illness, sent ripples of concern through the Gujarat-based colleagues and the wider psychiatric community. Prayers and messages flowed in, hoping against hope. Yet, as is the way with such luminous souls, her physical presence has now given way to cherished memories.
Eternal Togetherness
Mrs. Neena Neelam Bohra’s departure leaves a gentle void, but her contributions — the foundation she helped build, the smiles she shared, the quiet support that sustained so many — endure. She now rests in eternal peace alongside her beloved Shri Neelam Bohra, reunited beyond the trials of this world.
To her family, friends, and the entire psychiatric fraternity: thank you for sharing her with us. Her life reminds us that the greatest legacies often bloom not only through individual achievement, but through the loving partnerships that make those achievements possible.
May her soul shine brightly, and may her memories continue to inspire kindness, dedication, and that ever-present smile in all who knew her.
Om Shanti. Rest in eternal peace, dear Neena ji.
