In the small village of Saidnagar in Jalaun district of Uttar Pradesh, on 31 August 1956, a boy named Bhupendra Kumar Singh Sanjay was born. From those modest beginnings he carried a clear resolve: to mend what was broken and to prevent unnecessary suffering.

He completed his MBBS at GSVM Medical College, Kanpur, in 1980, then specialised in orthopaedics at PGI Chandigarh and trained further at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. Fellowships took him to Sweden, Japan, the United States, Australia and Russia. Each journey sharpened his skill; each return brought that skill home to India.

In Dehradun he built a reputation as an orthopaedic and spine surgeon who took on cases others found too difficult. In 2005 he removed a bone tumour weighing 16.5 kilograms—the largest ever recorded—earning a place in the Guinness World Records. Other pioneering operations followed: a successful hip replacement on a 98-year-old patient, re-implantation of sterilised tumour bone to save a teenager’s limb, complex spine surgeries on the elderly. Multiple entries in the Limca Book of Records marked these achievements.

Yet records were never the point. Moved by the sight of road-accident victims left disabled for life, he launched awareness campaigns in 2002 through radio, television and public lectures. He organised more than two hundred free orthopaedic camps and continues to offer free consultations to the poor every second Saturday of the month.

One young patient, after a successful limb-saving surgery, asked him, “Doctor, why do you still hold free camps after all these years?”

Bhupendra smiled. “Because a child who walks again is worth more than any record. Prevention and early care can straighten a sapling; once it becomes a tree, the damage is harder to undo.”

He founded the Uttarakhand chapter of the Indian Orthopaedic Association, wrote, taught, and spoke tirelessly on road safety and disability prevention. In 2021 the nation awarded him the Padma Shri for his distinguished service in medicine. More recently he was appointed President of AIIMS Guwahati, carrying the same commitment to excellence and equity into a new role.

From a village in Bundelkhand to operating theatres that set world records and free camps that restored hope, Dr. Bhupendra Kumar Singh Sanjay has spent a lifetime proving that skilled hands and an open heart can change the course of many lives.
