In the village of Dubaha in Muzaffarpur district of Bihar, on 3 September 1931, a boy named Chandreshwar Prasad Thakur was born. He topped the MBBS examination at Patna Medical College in 1957, collecting gold medals along the way, and later earned his MRCP from Edinburgh and London. He returned home to serve as Professor of Medicine at his alma mater, where he remained until 1984 and continues as Emeritus Professor.
Bihar in those years was gripped by kala-azar—visceral leishmaniasis—a deadly parasitic disease that wasted bodies and claimed countless lives. Chandreshwar made it his life’s scientific mission. He refined treatment protocols, tested new drugs, and worked closely with the World Health Organization for more than thirty-five years as a member of its expert committees and principal investigator. The methods he developed for treating kala-azar and post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis were accepted by WHO and helped turn the tide against the disease across India and beyond.
One young doctor, watching him examine yet another exhausted patient, once asked, “Sir, why this particular disease?”
Chandreshwar answered simply, “Because it is the disease of the poorest. If we can defeat it, we give them back their lives and their dignity.”
His research earned the Padma Shri in 1982, the Dr. B.C. Roy Award, and many other scientific honours. In 2017 the World Health Organization gave him its Lifetime Achievement Award—the first Indian medical scientist to receive it. In 2024 the nation conferred the Padma Bhushan in recognition of his pioneering work that transformed the treatment of kala-azar and saved innumerable lives.
Even in his nineties Dr. Chandreshwar Prasad Thakur remains a guiding presence in medicine and public life. From the lecture halls and wards of Patna Medical College to the global stage of WHO, he spent a lifetime turning rigorous science into hope for those who suffered most from a disease once thought unstoppable.
