Dr. J. Hareendran Nair, Padma Shri
Ayurveda Physician, Entrepreneur & Founder of Pankajakasthuri
A young entrepreneur once asked him, “Doctor, why did you leave a secure government job to start manufacturing Ayurvedic medicines on your own?”
Dr. J. Hareendran Nair replied simply, “My only agenda is the popularisation of Ayurveda as an effective and economical mode of treatment among ordinary people. If Ayurveda remains confined to a few clinics, it cannot reach those who need it most. Someone had to take it to the market and make it accessible.”
That conviction turned a small rural clinic into a major Ayurvedic enterprise.
J. Hareendran Nair was born in Kattakkada, Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala, into a modest family. His father, K. C. Janardhanan Nair, was a document writer, and his mother was Pankajam. He was the youngest of three children. After schooling at Government Upper Primary School, Kandala, and Christian College, Kattakada, he joined the Government Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram, and graduated with a BAMS degree in 1983.
He began his career as a research fellow at the Regional Research Institute, Poojappura. In 1986, when he was transferred to Shornur, he resigned from government service to pursue his vision of making Ayurveda widely available. In 1988 he founded Sree Dhanwanthari Ayurvedics at Poovachal, which later grew into Pankajakasthuri Herbals India Ltd. The brand name “Pankajakasthuri” combines his mother’s name (Pankajam) and his eldest daughter’s name (Kasthuri).
Starting with a small manufacturing unit and clinic, he developed a wide range of classical, proprietary and over-the-counter Ayurvedic products. Pankajakasthuri became one of Kerala’s first ISO-certified Ayurvedic pharmaceutical companies and expanded into Panchakarma centres, clinics, a herbal research foundation, and a 150-bed Ayurveda hospital. In 2002 he established Pankajakasthuri Ayurveda Medical College at Kattakkada — the first self-financing Ayurveda medical college in Kerala — which includes teaching facilities and a hospital.
Dr. Hareendran Nair has focused on research-based product development, formulating and standardising numerous proprietary Ayurvedic medicines for conditions such as respiratory disorders, diabetes, liver and kidney ailments. He has also emphasised social service: providing free meals, sponsoring education for students, offering free treatment to the underprivileged, and organising regular free medical camps.
The Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 2012 for his contributions to Ayurveda. Other recognitions include the Best Entrepreneur Award from the Government of Kerala, Ayurvedaratna Award, Management Leadership Award, and the Sai Maa International Award for Ayurvedic propagation.
He is married to Asha, who is actively involved in the administration of the group, and they have two daughters who have also pursued Ayurvedic studies. The family continues to reside in Thiruvananthapuram.
Even after building a large organisation, Dr. Hareendran Nair remains focused on the same goal.
“Ayurveda is effective, affordable and rooted in our tradition,” he has said. “If we present it in a modern, accessible way, it can benefit millions.”
From a modest background and a small research post to founding one of Kerala’s leading Ayurvedic groups, establishing the state’s first self-financing Ayurveda medical college, and receiving the Padma Shri, Dr. J. Hareendran Nair has played a significant role in popularising and modernising Ayurveda for contemporary India.
