Dr. K. S. Gopinath placed a reassuring hand on the patient’s shoulder and said, “Cancer is a challenge, but with timely surgery, careful planning and the right support, many people return to full lives. We will fight this together—one step at a time.”

That blend of surgical skill and quiet optimism has defined his long career.

Kodaganur S. Gopinath was born in Davangere, Karnataka, and grew up with modest means. He completed his early schooling at St. Paul’s Convent School and joined JJM Medical College, Davangere, in 1968, graduating MBBS in 1975 with a third rank. He pursued MS in General Surgery at King Edward Memorial Hospital and Seth G.S. Medical College, Mumbai. He later obtained FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and FAMS from the National Academy of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.

On returning to India he joined the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bengaluru, as a surgical oncologist. In 1989 he played a key role in establishing the Bangalore Institute of Oncology, one of the early dedicated multidisciplinary cancer centres in India. He has since served as Director and Consultant Surgical Oncologist at the Bangalore Institute of Oncology and Ambuja Health Care, and as a senior leader at HealthCare Global Enterprises (HCG), one of the largest cancer-care networks.

With more than four decades of experience, Dr. Gopinath specialises in the surgical management of breast cancer, head-and-neck cancers, cervical cancer and other solid tumours. He has also contributed to research on laparoscopic versus open surgery, rectal cancer and the role of yoga in reducing stress among cancer patients. He has held important leadership positions, including National President of the Association of Surgeons of India (2006) and National President of the Indian Association of Surgical Oncology (2003–2004).

The Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 2010 for his services to oncology. He has also received the Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award, the Association of Surgeons of India Award and the Panchajanya Puraskara.

Even after decades in a demanding specialty, Dr. Gopinath continues to emphasise early detection, multidisciplinary care and compassion.

“Cancer need not be a feared disease,” he often says. “With knowledge, teamwork and timely treatment, we can change outcomes and restore hope.”

From a small-town beginning in Davangere to building comprehensive cancer centres and training generations of surgeons, Dr. K. S. Gopinath has helped transform cancer care in Karnataka and beyond.
