In Tamil Nadu a young man named Gopalsamy Veluchamy chose the ancient path of Siddha medicine. He was among the first generation to earn formal degrees in the system—BIM and MD (Siddha)—and stepped into teaching and practice at a time when traditional knowledge needed both protection and careful modern support.

In 1970 he began as a lecturer at the Government Siddha Medical College in Palayamkottai. His clear teaching and deep commitment soon took him to Chennai as Head of Department at Arignar Anna Government Siddha College and Hospital. He later joined the Central Research Institute for Siddha under the Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha, rising to senior positions that shaped research and policy for the entire system.

For more than fifty years he worked to strengthen Siddha medicine—standardising medicines, guiding research, training physicians, and ensuring that the wisdom of the Siddhars remained practical and accessible. He served as Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Central Council for Research in Siddha and continues as honorary chairman of the Siddha Pharmacopoeia Committee, helping to define quality and safety for Siddha formulations used across the country.

One young doctor once asked him, “Sir, how do we keep the old knowledge alive in a changing world?”

Veluchamy answered with quiet conviction, “By practising it with honesty, studying it with care, and sharing it without fear. The medicines of the Siddhars still speak to the body. Our duty is to listen and to pass them on.”

In 2023 the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri for his lifelong service to the Siddha system of medicine. The honour was widely seen as recognition not only of one physician but of the tradition he had helped to carry forward.

From the classrooms of Palayamkottai to the research councils of the nation, Dr. G. Veluchamy has spent more than five decades proving that an ancient system of healing, when guided by knowledge and devotion, continues to serve the people of today.
