The Guardian Against Diabetes
In the lecture halls and wards of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, Anoop Misra trained as a physician and completed his MD in Internal Medicine. Further research as a World Health Organization Fellow took him to the Royal Free Hospital in London and later to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, where he deepened his expertise in endocrinology and human nutrition.
Returning to India, he headed the Diabetes and Metabolism Group and the Clinical Pharmacology Unit at AIIMS for a decade. He then joined Fortis, eventually becoming Chairman of the Fortis C-DOC Centre for Diabetes, Obesity and Cholesterol—a specialised institution dedicated to metabolic disorders. He also directs the National Diabetes, Obesity and Cholesterol Foundation (NDOC) and the Diabetes Foundation (India).
For more than four decades Dr. Misra has focused on the unique patterns of diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome in the Indian population. His research on body composition, liver and pancreatic fat, nutrition, and lifestyle interventions has produced over 375 scientific papers and chapters, placing him among the top scientists in diabetes research globally. He has served as honorary physician to two Indian Prime Ministers, advised national health bodies, and led community intervention programmes. As Editor-in-Chief of major journals and author of popular books such as Diabetes with Delight, he has worked to make complex science accessible to patients and the public.
His contributions earned the Dr. B.C. Roy Award in 2006—India’s highest medical honour—and the Padma Shri in 2007. Numerous other recognitions and named orations have followed.
Today, at Fortis C-DOC and through the foundations he leads, Prof. Anoop Misra continues to treat patients, train young doctors, and push for prevention and remission of diabetes through diet, weight management, and evidence-based care. In clinics where blood sugar is brought under control and in communities where awareness prevents disease, his lifelong mission endures: that no Indian family should suffer needlessly from the silent epidemic of diabetes.
