Dr. Subhash Chand Manchanda

In the cardiology departments of AIIMS and later Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi, Dr. Subhash Chand Manchanda (also known as Subhash Chander Manchanda) earned a reputation as a thoughtful physician who believed the heart could be protected and even healed through more than medicine alone. After completing his MBBS, MD in Medicine and DM in Cardiology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, he spent 36 years at the institution, rising to become Professor and Head of the Department of Cardiology. There he helped introduce angioplasty and trained generations of specialists while conducting pioneering research on high-altitude heart problems that aided Indian troops serving in extreme conditions.

In 2003 he joined Sir Ganga Ram Hospital as a senior consultant. Alongside conventional treatment he became known for his work on lifestyle medicine—showing that yoga, meditation and careful diet could help reverse or slow coronary artery disease. He organised regular “heart reversal” camps at Adhyatma Sadhna Kendra in Mehrauli and continued to teach through the Diplomate of National Board programme. Over a long career he published more than 300 scientific papers and several books, and served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Preventive Cardiology.

“The heart responds to how we live,” he would tell patients and students. His approach combined rigorous clinical science with practical prevention, and he remained involved in charitable work through organisations supporting underprivileged children and the elderly. The Government of India recognised his contributions to medicine with the Padma Shri in 2004.

From a young cardiologist at AIIMS to a senior physician who championed both advanced treatment and simple daily habits for heart health, Subhash Chand Manchanda’s career stands as a quiet bridge between modern cardiology and the wisdom of lifestyle care.
