Kamal Samarath

In the scholarly atmosphere of Pune in 1917, a girl named Kamal Samarath was born into a family that believed knowledge was a birthright for every child, boy or girl. Her father, Dinkar Dattatreya Samarath, taught biology at Fergusson College and encouraged his bright daughter to look closely at the living world. From an early age she showed a quiet fascination with cells, patterns, and the hidden processes of life.

She completed her schooling at Huzurpaga High School for Girls and went on to study botany and zoology at Fergusson College. In 1943 she earned her Master’s degree in cytogenetics from the Agriculture College in Pune. That same decade she married the mathematician J. T. Ranadive and moved to Bombay. Her husband supported her academic ambitions without hesitation, and under the guidance of the pathologist V. R. Khanolkar she completed her PhD in cytology from the University of Bombay in 1949.

A post-doctoral fellowship took her to Johns Hopkins University in America, where she trained in the emerging techniques of tissue culture under George Gey, the scientist who had developed the famous HeLa cell line. When she returned to India she carried not only new skills but a clear resolve: cancer research in her own country needed laboratories equal to the best in the world.

At the Indian Cancer Research Centre in Mumbai she established India’s first tissue culture laboratory. In those early years every medium and reagent had to be prepared by hand. Colleagues later recalled the long evenings when Kamal would stay late, checking cultures under the microscope.

One young researcher once asked her, “Bai, why do you insist on making everything yourself when we could import ready materials?”

She looked up from the bench, her voice calm but firm. “Because if we depend only on what comes from outside, our science will never stand on its own feet. We must learn to grow the tools as carefully as we grow the cells.”

Her work opened new paths in understanding the links between hormones, viruses and cancer. Through careful animal models she studied leukaemia, breast cancer and oesophageal cancer. She was among the first Indian scientists to explore the hereditary factors in breast cancer and the role of tumour viruses. Parallel research on the leprosy bacillus contributed to the scientific foundation for a leprosy vaccine. Over her career she published more than two hundred scientific papers.

From 1966 to 1970 she served as Acting Director of the Indian Cancer Research Centre. She also helped found the Indian Women Scientists’ Association in 1973, believing that women in science needed both opportunity and mutual support. After formal retirement she continued to work among rural communities near Rajpur and Ahmednagar, training women as health workers and teaching basic nutrition and medical care.

In 1982 the nation recognised her with the Padma Bhushan for medicine. When the news reached the laboratory, younger colleagues gathered around her.

“Bai, this is a great honour for all of us,” one said.

Kamal smiled the quiet smile her students knew so well. “The honour belongs to every culture that grew, every experiment that failed and taught us something, and every young woman who will now find it a little easier to walk this path. The real work is still waiting on the bench.”

She passed away on 11 April 2001 at the age of eighty-three. Today her name is remembered whenever Indian scientists speak of tissue culture, of cancer biology, or of the long effort to make science more open to women. In the long story of Indian medicine and research, Kamal Jayasing Ranadive stands as a pioneer who built laboratories where none existed, asked questions that others had not yet framed, and left behind both knowledge and an institution that continues to open doors for those who follow.
