The Voice Restorer of Madras

In the medical lineage of Tamil Nadu, where healing runs through generations, Mohan Kameswaran was born into a family already distinguished by service. His father, Prof. Shanmugam Kameswaran, was himself a pioneering ENT surgeon and Padma Shri awardee; his mother, Dr. Lalitha Kameswaran, received the Dr. B.C. Roy Award. The son would one day stand beside them as the only father-son duo in Indian medicine to share both national honours.

He graduated from Madras Medical College in 1976, completed his MS in Otorhinolaryngology in 1981, and earned the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. After a period as professor at King Saud University in Saudi Arabia, he returned to Chennai determined to raise the standard of ENT care in India.

In 1996 he founded the Madras ENT Research Foundation (MERF), which grew into one of the country’s premier centres for advanced ear, nose and throat treatment. Under his leadership MERF became a place of firsts: the first auditory brainstem implant in South and South-East Asia, the first paediatric auditory brainstem implant in Asia, the first totally implantable hearing device surgery in the Asia-Pacific region, and the introduction of KTP/532 laser-assisted ENT surgery to India. He has performed thousands of cochlear implants—among the largest personal series in the world—and mentored dozens of centres across India and abroad.

He also founded the MERF Institute of Speech and Hearing to train the next generation of audiologists and speech-language pathologists. Alongside surgical excellence he worked to make advanced care accessible, helping shape government schemes that brought free cochlear implants to children who would otherwise have remained in silence.

In 2006 President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam conferred the Padma Shri upon him for distinguished service in medicine. Later honours followed, including the Dr. B.C. Roy Award. Visiting professorships, hundreds of research papers, and countless workshops marked a career dedicated to restoring the gift of hearing and speech.

Today, as Managing Director and Senior Consultant of MERF, Honorary Distinguished Professor at the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, and mentor to surgeons across the region, Prof. Mohan Kameswaran continues the work begun by his father. In operating theatres where silence is replaced by sound, and in classrooms where new healers are trained, the voice of Madras still speaks—clear, compassionate, and unbroken.
