The man who taught India to look under the microscope—and beyond it.
In a quiet Konkan village in 1895, a boy named Vasant was born into a family that valued both the scalpel and the shlokas. His father, Dr. Ramji Dhondo Khanolkar, was a surgeon who had marched with Lord Roberts’ army to Kandahar and later settled in Quetta, where he became a legendary local doctor and a deep scholar of Sanskrit. Young Vasant inherited both gifts: a sharp clinical eye and a love of languages that would one day let him move easily between Marathi, Sanskrit, English, French, German and more.
At seventeen he joined Grant Medical College in Bombay. Within months he was on a ship to London. There he earned a B.Sc., then his medical degree, and finally, in 1923, an M.D. in Pathology—one of the youngest Graham Research Scholars the University of London had seen. When he returned in 1924, India had almost no Indian pathologists of his calibre.
“Pathology is not just looking at dead tissue,” he told a sceptical colleague at Grant Medical College. “It is listening to the story the cells are trying to tell. If we do not train Indians to hear it, we will always be borrowing other people’s diagnoses.”
He became Professor of Pathology at Grant and Sir J.J. Hospital, then in 1926 moved to the newly founded Seth G.S. Medical College and K.E.M. Hospital as its first Professor and Head of Pathology and Bacteriology. He built a proper museum of specimens, organised systematic teaching, and insisted that medical students understand basic sciences—biochemistry, biophysics, statistics—long before such ideas were fashionable in Indian medical education.
Students remembered him pacing the lecture hall, rarely facing them, delivering dense, precise talks. One later recalled his closing line on tumours: “The biological behaviour of cancer is unpredictable.” It was less a confession of ignorance than a challenge.
In 1941 he left the teaching post for the newly opened Tata Memorial Hospital as Director of Laboratories. The work that would make him the “Father of Pathology and Medical Research in India” began in earnest. He looked at hospital records and asked simple, uncomfortable questions: Is cancer rare in India, as many believed? Or does it simply wear different faces?
He and his team showed that certain Indian habits—chewing tobacco with betel nut, reverse smoking of chutta, the way a dhoti was worn—were linked to cancers of the mouth, throat and other sites. A landmark 1955 paper with L.D. Sanghvi and others in the British Medical Journal connected smoking and chewing to upper-alimentary-tract cancers. He also studied the high incidence of breast cancer among Parsees, blood-group genetics, the Rh factor, and the neural beginnings of leprosy.
One rainy June morning in 1943, a young scientist named Kamal Ranadive (later a pioneering cancer researcher herself) waded through knee-deep water to meet him. She found him in his office, walls lined with portraits of great scientists, discussing a post-mortem with a young assistant.
“Young man,” Khanolkar said, “you have to treat every cancer case as a topic for research if we hope to make progress in understanding this dreadful disease. We must develop a research attitude towards every precise observation.”
He turned to the nervous newcomer, dissected a mouse on the spot to show her the five pairs of mammary glands, and within hours made her feel she belonged. “Work never kills a man,” he liked to say. There were no attendance registers; people simply stayed late because the atmosphere made hard work feel natural.
In 1952 he founded the Indian Cancer Research Centre (later the Cancer Research Institute) next to Tata Memorial and directed it until 1963. He became National Research Professor of Medicine, served on WHO panels on cancer and leprosy, sat on the UN scientific committee on the effects of atomic radiation, and was Vice-Chancellor of Bombay University (1960–63). He helped shape the early plans for AIIMS, the Postgraduate Institute in Chandigarh, and the Institute for Research in Reproduction. He was the founding president of the Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists.
At home he was a loving father to his daughter Shakuntala and son Mahesh. Colleagues remembered a man who could quote Sanskrit poetry one moment and discuss experimental design the next, who demanded precision in observation and writing, and who believed multidisciplinary teamwork was the only way to tackle problems as complex as cancer.
The Government of India awarded him the Padma Bhushan in 1955. He died on 29 October 1978 at K.E.M. Hospital. National Pathology Day is now observed on his birthday, 13 April. An oration still carries his name.
He never claimed to have “conquered” cancer. He simply insisted that Indians must study their own patterns of disease with the same rigour the West brought to its own—and then share the findings with the world. In doing so he turned pathology in India from a supporting craft into a living science.
