Dr. Anoop Krishna

This is the case of Dr. Anoop Krishna, a Kollam (Kerala) orthopaedic surgeon who died in October 2020. News reports agree with the broad outline of the post but differ on some details.

What reports confirm

  • He was 35 and ran “Anoop Ortho Care” hospital in Kadappakada, Kollam. He specialised in arthroscopy, sports medicine and arthroplasty. gulfnews thenewsminute
  • On September 23, a child had a cardiac arrest during surgery led by him. The child died later at hospital, and the parents complained that anaesthesia caused it. • The IMA’s Dr. Sulphi Noohu said he had agreed to operate after several other doctors declined, perhaps because of COVID-19 risks. He called Anoop “a martyr of social media trial”. Many Kerala doctors criticised the online trial. gulfnews thenewsminute

Where the post differs or goes beyond the reports

  • The post says the surgery was a tibial pseudoarthrosis correction. Reports describe it variously as knee or leg surgery. I couldn’t confirm the procedure.
  • The post says it was free of charge because of the child’s poor finances, and that he trained at Trivandrum and Tirunelveli. I found neither in the reports.
  • The child’s age is given as six or seven, depending on the outlet.
  • The “morals” at the end are the poster’s opinions, not facts. The reports also don’t establish medical wrongdoing.
  • The post says he died on the day it was posted (2 Oct), but reports place his death on 1 October.

Why it mattered
The case became a landmark in India’s debate on trial by social media and on doctors’ safety and mental health, especially when treating high-risk patients during the pandemic.
