While its exact physiological role in humans is still a subject of ongoing study, several primary functions have been identified:
Saliva Production: The uvula contains a high concentration of mucous glands that secrete thin saliva, helping to keep the throat and mouth moist and lubricated.
Swallowing and Speech: During swallowing, the soft palate and uvula move superiorly to close off the nasopharynx, preventing food and liquids from entering the nasal cavity. It also assists in articulation for producing certain speech sounds.
Immunological Defense: It contains a rich collection of lymphoid tissue, contributing to mucosal immunity by helping monitor and react to pathogens entering through the mouth and nose.
