Dr. Raymond Vahan Damadian

Dr. Raymond Vahan Damadian (1936–2022) was the determined physician-inventor who built the world’s first MRI scanner, driven by a personal mission against cancer and an unyielding belief that science could peer inside the living body without the risks of X-rays.

Born March 16, 1936, in Manhattan and raised in Forest Hills, Queens, he was the son of Vahan Damadian, an Armenian immigrant and newspaper photoengraver who had survived the Armenian Genocide, and Odette, an accountant. Young Raymond was a child prodigy—gifted violinist who studied for years at Juilliard, tennis player, and restless experimenter. At age 10, his maternal grandmother’s agonizing death from breast cancer left a permanent mark. He later recalled the sounds of her suffering that haunted him for months afterward. That pain planted a seed: there had to be a better way to detect disease early.23

At 15 he won a Ford Foundation scholarship to the University of Wisconsin–Madison, leaving music behind (“I was no Itzhak Perlman,” he later quipped). He earned a B.S. in mathematics in 1956, then an M.D. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1960. Fellowships at Harvard and elsewhere introduced him to nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), a chemist’s tool for studying molecules. While investigating sodium and potassium in cells, a 1969 experiment with bacteria produced an almost instantaneous signal. Damadian was stunned.

“If we could do on a human what we just did on that test tube,” he thought, “maybe we could build a scanner that would go over the body to hunt down cancer.” Colleagues found the idea preposterous. One associate thought it far-fetched. Damadian pushed on. In 1970–71 he showed that cancerous rat tissues had distinctly longer NMR relaxation times than healthy ones. His paper in Science argued that this difference could detect internal tumors non-invasively. Skepticism was intense; many dismissed the leap from test tubes to living people.25

He filed the first MRI-related patent in 1972 (granted 1974) for an apparatus and method to detect cancer with NMR. At SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, with graduate students Michael Goldsmith and Lawrence Minkoff, he spent years building a massive homemade superconducting magnet—winding roughly 30 miles of niobium-titanium wire. They named the machine Indomitable. Damadian was too large to fit inside, so on the night of July 2–3, 1977, the thinner Minkoff climbed in. After hours of work, at about 4:45 a.m., the first human MRI image appeared: a clear cross-section of Minkoff’s chest showing heart, lungs, aorta, and more. The team was exhausted and exhilarated.

“Having birthed the original idea of the N.M.R. body scanner, we were intent on being the first to accomplish it,” Damadian later wrote. They monitored Minkoff overnight for any ill effects; there were none.29

In 1978 he founded FONAR Corporation to commercialize the technology. The first commercial scanner followed in 1980; FDA approval came in 1984. MRI rapidly transformed diagnostics—offering detailed soft-tissue images without ionizing radiation. Damadian kept innovating: open scanners to ease claustrophobia, stand-up MRIs, and more, accumulating dozens of patents. He fought hard in court against larger companies he believed infringed his patents, winning major settlements, including a significant judgment against General Electric. “The court verdict gives us official recognition for origination,” he said afterward.15

Recognition came: National Medal of Technology from President Reagan in 1988 (shared with Paul Lauterbur), induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1989, Lemelson-MIT Lifetime Achievement Award, and others. Indomitable went to the Smithsonian. Yet the 2003 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine went only to Lauterbur and Peter Mansfield for key imaging techniques. Damadian was furious. He took out full-page newspaper ads titled “The Shameful Wrong That Must Be Righted” and wrote that “some unconscionable scientific pilferer is trying to steal my entire life.” He maintained that his foundational discovery of tissue differences and the first working whole-body scanner made the medical application possible. The controversy never fully subsided.0

A man of strong convictions, Damadian was also a person of deep faith who later spoke openly about creationism and the role of prayer in his work. He allowed daily prayer at FONAR and credited divine prompting alongside scientific rigor. Family mattered deeply; his father’s words around the time of the first human scan—“You may think you don’t need God, but your children do need him”—helped reorient his priorities. He married Donna Terry; they had three children. She predeceased him in 2020.28

Damadian died of cardiac arrest on August 3, 2022, at his home in Woodbury, New York, at age 86. He is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Though he never fully achieved his childhood dream of a universal cancer cure, the machine he forced into existence has saved or extended countless lives by revealing what was once hidden. In the end, the violinist who became a physician, the skeptic-defying builder of Indomitable, left medicine permanently changed—one determined scan at a time.
