The Pioneer of Male Fertility in India

Born on 17 November 1935 in Nellikuppam, South Arcot district of Tamil Nadu, Arjunan Rajasekaran began his medical journey at Government Stanley Medical College, Chennai. After early service as a village doctor at the Primary Health Centre in Vadalur, he specialised in urology, completing his MCh and rising through the ranks at Kilpauk Medical College and Madras Medical College.

He founded the Department of Urology at Government Royapettah Hospital and later served as Professor and Head of Urology at Madras Medical College for two decades. A trailblazer in andrology, he established the Madras Andrology and Assisted Reproduction Research Centre (MARC) in Chennai—one of India’s first dedicated clinics for male infertility—bringing advanced microsurgical techniques and hope to countless childless couples. He introduced percutaneous nephrolithotomy and ureterorenoscopy in the region and trained generations of urologists.

He served as President of the Urological Society of India (1992–93), President of the National Board of Examinations, and held key positions with the Medical Council of India, ICMR and AIIMS faculty selection committees. A Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and recipient of an honorary D.Sc. from the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, he also received the Dr. B.C. Roy National Award in 1998, the Urology Gold Medal, and other distinctions for teaching and clinical excellence.

In 2008 the Government of India conferred the Padma Shri upon him for his contributions to medical science.

Today, in the clinics and training centres he helped build, and in the many families who found parenthood through his pioneering work, the legacy of Padma Shri Dr. Arjunan Rajasekaran endures—quiet skill, scientific innovation, and a lifelong commitment to restoring health and hope in the field of male reproductive medicine.
