In the coastal village of Pangala near Udupi, Karnataka, on 18 August 1938, a boy named Belle Monappa Hegde was born. From an early age he showed a sharp mind and a restless curiosity about how the human body worked—and how it could heal.
He studied at Stanley Medical College in Madras, graduating with his MBBS in 1960, and went on to earn his MD from King George’s Medical College in Lucknow. Advanced training in cardiology took him to London and Harvard. Fellowships from the Royal Colleges and the American College of Cardiology followed. Yet he always returned to teaching.
At Kasturba Medical College in Mangalore he began as a young tutor and rose steadily—professor, head of department, principal, dean. Students remember him walking into the lecture hall with a sparkle in his eye and a question ready.
“Medicine is not only about the disease,” he would tell them. “It is about the person who carries it. Listen first. The heart speaks in more ways than one.”
In 1999 he became Vice Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, guiding the institution until 2003. Alongside administration he wrote prolifically—nearly thirty-five books and thousands of articles in English and Kannada—making complex medical ideas accessible to ordinary readers. He founded and edited the Journal of the Science of Healing Outcomes, always searching for ways to bring science and holistic understanding closer together.
One young doctor once asked him after a long discussion, “Sir, why do you keep questioning the conventional path?”
Hegde smiled. “Because the patient is more than a set of numbers. If we forget that, we forget why we became doctors.”
His contributions earned him the Dr. B.C. Roy Award for eminent teachers in 1999, the Padma Bhushan in 2010, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2021—India’s second-highest civilian honour.
Even in his later years he continued to write, teach, and speak. From a village near Udupi to the highest recognitions of the land, Dr. Belle Monappa Hegde has spent a lifetime reminding the medical world that true healing begins with the whole human being.
