A junior colleague once asked him after a particularly complex abdominal operation, “Sir, how do you remember every anatomical detail so precisely even after decades?”

Dr. M. Ahmed Ali smiled and replied, “Surgery is like an art. A good artist never forgets the colours and the canvas. The human body is our canvas. We study it deeply, respect it, and serve those who need us most. Memory comes from care.”

That blend of skill, memory and quiet service has defined his long career.

Madanur Ahmed Ali was born in 1940 in Ambur, a town in Vellore district, Tamil Nadu. He completed his early education with distinction and joined the prestigious Madras Medical College. He obtained his MBBS in 1964, followed by MS in General Surgery (1974), MNAMS in General Surgery (1978), and MCh in Surgical Gastroenterology (1981). He was later awarded the Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) in Surgery, a rare academic distinction.

He served in government institutions, including Thanjavur Medical College and the major hospitals associated with Madras Medical College in Chennai. After retiring from government service, he continued his clinical work for decades at Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals (and related centres) in Chetpet, Chennai, where he has been associated for over four decades.

Dr. Ali specialised in surgical gastroenterology and proctology, handling complex procedures involving the liver, pancreas, bile ducts, gallbladder, oesophagus, intestines and portal hypertension. He is known for advanced techniques, including laparoscopic and other minimally invasive approaches, as well as major operations such as the Whipple procedure. He has published papers in peer-reviewed journals and trained generations of surgeons.

Early in his career he was offered a position in New York after postgraduate training but declined it, choosing to remain in India and serve middle-class and poorer patients. He has often recalled the advice of his teachers: not to run after money but to serve people. During a cholera epidemic in his earlier years, when intravenous fluids ran short, he used tender coconut water as a life-saving alternative based on medical literature he had read — an episode that later became a cherished story among colleagues.

Even after formal retirement he continued practice and visits his native Ambur regularly to offer free medical services and support to the community. He has held leadership roles in professional bodies, including the Indian Association of Surgical Gastroenterology (Tamil Nadu) and associations of surgeons in the state.

The Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 2011 for his contributions to medicine. He received the honour from President Pratibha Patil at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

His son, Dr. Mansoor, is a hepatopancreatobiliary (liver, pancreas and bile duct) specialist practising in London.

Throughout his career Dr. Ahmed Ali has remained known for humility, photographic memory and dedication.

“We must serve the people who need us,” he has said. “Knowledge is valuable only when it reaches those who cannot easily reach specialised care.”

From a small-town boy in Ambur to a leading surgical gastroenterologist in Chennai and a Padma Shri awardee, Dr. M. Ahmed Ali has combined academic excellence, surgical artistry and lifelong service to patients across Tamil Nadu.
