A young student once asked him, “Sir, why do you spend so much energy on research and education instead of simply practising Ayurveda?”

Dr. P. R. Krishna Kumar replied with quiet conviction, “Ayurveda is not only for those who already believe in it. If it is to serve the world, it must stand the test of science, education and integrity. That is the work of a lifetime.”

That lifelong commitment transformed him into one of the most respected modern torch-bearers of Ayurveda.

Born on 23 September 1951 in Shoranur, Kerala (raised in Coimbatore), into a distinguished family of Ayurvedic physicians, P. R. Krishna Kumar was the son of Aryavaidyan P. V. Rama Varier, founder of the Arya Vaidya Pharmacy (AVP), and Smt. Pankajam Rama Varier. He studied Ayurveda at the prestigious Shornur Ayurveda College in Kerala.

Instead of focusing solely on clinical practice, he dedicated himself to the larger mission of strengthening, standardising and globalising Ayurveda. After his father’s passing he became Managing Director of The Arya Vaidya Pharmacy (Coimbatore) Ltd., expanding it into a leading institution for quality Ayurvedic medicines, clinical care, education and research. He established The Ayurvedic Trust, which oversees the Arya Vaidya Chikitsalayam and Research Institute (AVCRI) and the AVP Research Foundation.

In 1977 he initiated the first clinical research study on Ayurvedic treatment for rheumatoid arthritis in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)—a pioneering effort that helped place Ayurveda on the global scientific map. Later, the U.S. National Institutes of Health funded further collaborative research through the University of Washington.

He also revolutionised Ayurvedic education. In the 1980s he launched a unique free 7½-year gurukula-style Ayurveda course (known as the “Coimbatore Experiment”), affiliated first to Madras University and later to Bharathiar University and approved by the Central Council for Indian Medicine. The programme produced a generation of deeply trained physicians and scholars.

He served as Chancellor of Avinashilingam University (Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women), Coimbatore, and as Chairman of CARe Keralam (Confederation for Ayurvedic Renaissance – Keralam), working to standardise Ayurvedic medicines and strengthen the industry. He travelled to more than fifty countries promoting authentic Ayurveda as a way of life.

In 2009 the Government of India conferred the Padma Shri on him for his contributions to Ayurveda. In 2016 he received the national Dhanvantari Puraskar for his work in Ayurveda education, health and community services. He also received an honorary doctorate and several other recognitions.

Dr. P. R. Krishna Kumar remained unmarried, dedicating his life entirely to the cause. He passed away on 16 September 2020 in Coimbatore due to COVID-19, just days before his 69th birthday.

Even in his final years he continued to insist:

“Ayurveda does not need to be defended by emotion alone. It needs rigorous education, honest research and sincere practice. When those three come together, the world will listen.”

Through the institutions he built, the research he championed and the students he inspired, Dr. P. R. Krishna Kumar left Ayurveda stronger, more credible and more global than he found it.
