The patient, a middle-aged man with severe knee pain, looked worried.

That blend of technical excellence and personal reassurance has defined his career for more than three decades.
Dr. Yash Gulati graduated with an MBBS from Maulana Azad Medical College, University of Delhi, earning distinction in Preventive and Social Medicine. He completed his MS in Orthopaedics from the same institution and went on to obtain an MCh in Orthopaedics from the University of Liverpool, England. He also earned a Diploma in Sports Medicine from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Dublin.
After working as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at St. James’s Hospital in Dublin, he returned to India. He served as Head of the Orthopaedic Unit at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, New Delhi, and later held senior positions at BLK Super Speciality Hospital and Batra Hospital. In 1996 he joined Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi, where he continues as Senior Consultant in Orthopaedics, specialising in joint replacement and spine surgery. He also serves as Advisor in Orthopaedics for the Apollo Group and is a visiting consultant at RAK Hospital in the UAE.
He is widely recognised as a pioneer in several advanced techniques. He was among the first in India to perform endoscopic disc surgery for slipped discs and has specialised in minimally invasive spine surgery, microdiscectomy, and correction of spinal deformities such as scoliosis and spondylolisthesis. In joint replacement he pioneered gyroscope-based computer navigation for knee replacement in India and has performed a large series of total hip replacements, including the highest number of such procedures for sickle-cell disease patients in the country. He has extensive experience in both primary and revision knee and hip replacements.
His patients have included former Prime Ministers of India, three Presidents of India, international sportspersons, diplomats and patients from many countries. He has demonstrated live surgeries at national and international conferences and has trained and lectured extensively.
In 2009 the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri—the youngest orthopaedic surgeon to receive the honour at the time. In 2016 he received the prestigious Dr. B.C. Roy National Award and was appointed Honorary Surgeon to the President of India. He has also served as Honorary Consultant to the Indian Armed Forces and the Border Security Force, and has received numerous other professional recognitions.
Even after decades of complex surgeries, Dr. Gulati remains known for his clear communication and patient-centred approach.
