In the heart of Karnataka, a determined young man named John Ebnezar set out on a path that would redefine orthopaedic care in India. Born into a disciplined household, he carried the quiet strength of his roots into the halls of the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences in Hubli, where he earned his MBBS. Specialising further, he completed his DNB in Orthopaedics and went on to become not only a skilled surgeon but a visionary who saw beyond the operating table.
Where others saw only bones and joints, John saw the whole person. He pioneered “Wholistic Orthopaedics”—an approach that blended modern surgical precision with the ancient wisdom of yoga, lifestyle changes and holistic therapies. “Pain is not just in the joint,” he would tell his patients and students. “It lives in the mind, the habits, the daily rhythm of life. Heal the whole, and the part follows.”
His hands repaired countless fractures, spines and arthritic knees, yet his pen proved equally powerful. Over the years he authored more than two hundred books on orthopaedics—textbooks that trained generations of doctors and guides that reached ordinary people. His prolific writing earned him multiple Guinness World Records. He founded the Geriatric Orthopaedic Society of India, recognising that the growing elderly population needed specialised, compassionate care. Through community camps and awareness drives he took knowledge of bone health, blood donation and disease prevention to the masses.
A patient once asked him after a successful recovery, “Doctor, why do you spend so much time teaching yoga and writing books when you could just operate?”
John smiled. “Because surgery can fix a bone, but knowledge can prevent a lifetime of suffering. That is true healing.”
In 2010 Karnataka honoured him with the Rajyotsava Award. In 2015 came the prestigious Dr. B.C. Roy National Award—the highest honour in Indian medicine. The following year, in 2016, the nation conferred upon him the Padma Shri, making him the first orthopaedic surgeon from Karnataka to receive the civilian honour.
Today, as a Padma Shri and Dr. B.C. Roy awardee, TEDx speaker, and tireless teacher, Dr. John Ebnezar continues to operate, write, research and inspire from Bengaluru. From a young medical student in Karnataka to a global pioneer of holistic orthopaedic care, his journey remains a living reminder that the best medicine treats not only the body, but the entire human being.
