In the historic city of Hyderabad, a young man named Mohammed Abdul Waheed grew up with a quiet determination to heal not only the body but also the invisible wounds of stigma. He graduated in Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS) from Osmania University in 1979 and soon devoted himself to the ancient yet living science of Unani healing.

He joined the Central Research Institute of Unani Medicine in Hyderabad and rose to become its officiating director under the Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine. For more than three decades he focused on one of the most socially painful conditions—vitiligo, the white patches that so often isolate young men and women from ordinary life. Through rigorous clinical research, Phase II and Phase III trials conducted to international standards, and the development of seventeen specialised Unani formulations, he treated more than two lakh patients from India and abroad. White patches faded. Confidence returned. Lives changed.

He also coordinated multi-centric trials on diabetes, hypertension and hepatitis, always insisting that traditional medicine must stand the test of modern science. Training at AIIMS New Delhi, KEM Hospital Mumbai and institutions in the United States sharpened his research methods, yet his heart remained rooted in the compassion of Unani tradition.

One day a young woman, after months of treatment, looked at her recovering skin and asked softly, “Doctor, will people still stare at me?”

Mohammed Abdul Waheed answered with gentle certainty, “No. The medicine is only half the cure. The other half is the courage you have already shown. Walk with your head high—the world will learn to see you, not the patches.”

In 2017 the Government of India conferred upon him the Padma Shri. He also received the Best Scientist Award from AIIMS and several national and international honours for elevating Unani medicine onto the global stage.

From a dedicated Unani graduate in Hyderabad to the Padma Shri physician who restored colour and dignity to hundreds of thousands of lives, Dr. Mohammed Abdul Waheed’s journey remains a luminous bridge between ancient wisdom and modern hope.
