From his early years he was drawn to the delicate work of restoring what disease or injury had taken away—whether it was the fight against cancer through surgery or the careful reconstruction of form and function through plastic surgery.

He trained rigorously and devoted himself to building these specialised fields in places where they were still emerging. Colleagues watched him introduce new techniques, train younger surgeons, and insist that advanced care should not remain confined to big-city centres alone.
