The Master of the Urinary Tract
Narmada Prasad Gupta graduated MBBS from Government Medical College, Jabalpur, in 1970, followed by an MS in General Surgery from the same institution in 1974. He then moved to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, where he completed his MCh in Urology in 1977 and joined the faculty in 1979. Over the next three decades he rose through every rank—assistant professor, associate professor, additional professor, and finally Professor and Head of the Department of Urology from 1998 until his retirement in 2010.
During those years he performed more than 30,000 urological operations, covering the full spectrum of the specialty: prostate disease, kidney and bladder cancer, stone disease, reconstructive surgery, male infertility and sexual dysfunction. In 2006 he introduced robotic urological surgery at AIIMS and went on to perform the largest number of such procedures by any Indian urologist. His textbooks—Robotic Radical Prostatectomy, All About Prostate Gland, and others—and more than 300 scientific papers have guided surgeons across the country and beyond.
He served as President of the Urological Society of India (2007) and of the Urological Association of Asia (2008–2010), and as a National Delegate and Board Member of the Société Internationale d’Urologie. After leaving AIIMS he joined Medanta – The Medicity as Chairman of the Academics and Research Division in Urology, continuing to teach, operate and innovate.
Recognition has been generous: the Dr. B.C. Roy National Award in 2005, the Padma Shri in 2007, fellowship of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, and numerous orations and lifetime achievement honours.
Today, as Professor Emeritus at Medanta, Dr. Narmada Prasad Gupta remains a quiet force in Indian urology—restoring function, relieving suffering, and training the next generation with the same steady hands and clear mind that have served patients for more than four decades. In operating theatres where robotic arms move with microscopic precision and in the lives of thousands who walk free of pain, his lifelong dedication endures.
