In the bustling heart of Delhi, on 28 November 1963, a boy named Nikhil Tandon entered a world that would one day look to him for answers about the silent epidemics creeping through Indian homes—diabetes, thyroid disorders, and the quiet storms of metabolic disease.
From an early age he was drawn to the precision of science. While other children played cricket in the lanes, Nikhil often sat with books, curious about how the body’s invisible messengers—hormones—could shape an entire life. “The body is a conversation,” he would later tell his students. “Hormones are the language. If we learn to listen, we can change the story.”
He walked the corridors of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences as a young man, earning his MD in Medicine with quiet determination. But knowledge, he felt, needed deeper roots. He crossed the oceans to the University of Cambridge, where he pursued his PhD amid the ancient libraries and laboratories of England. There, among rigorous minds, he sharpened his questions about autoimmune thyroid disease, the rising tide of diabetes, and how events in early life could echo into adulthood as chronic illness.
In 1993 he returned home. “India needs its own answers,” he told a colleague over tea one evening. “We cannot simply import solutions. Our people, our genes, our lives are different.” He joined the faculty of AIIMS and never left. Decade after decade he remained, rising to become Professor and Head of the Department of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes—the very department that became a beacon for patients from every corner of the country.
In the outpatient clinics, a middle-aged woman once sat across from him, eyes heavy with worry. “Doctor, my sugar will not listen. I am scared for my children.”
Nikhil leaned forward, voice calm. “We will listen together. Medicine is not only tablets. It is understanding your life—your food, your stress, your sleep. We will find a way.”
His research stretched far beyond the consulting room. He became a founding investigator of the CARRS Cohort—one of the largest studies tracking cardio-metabolic risk in South Asia—following more than sixteen thousand adults across Delhi and Chennai for nearly fifteen years. He coordinated the Indian arm of the global ADVANCE study. His group completed the largest multi-country trial on preventing diabetes in women with a history of gestational diabetes, spanning India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. “Whatever research I do,” he has said, “must translate into benefit for the people I am expected to treat.”
He served on WHO expert groups, eventually chairing the Technical Advisory Group on Diabetes. In India he helped shape national guidelines, technology-enabled care models that reached primary health centres, and registries that tracked young people living with diabetes. His work influenced the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases.
Recognition came, but never defined him. In 2005 the Medical Council of India awarded him the Dr. B.C. Roy Award for Eminent Medical Teacher. Ten years later, in 2015, the nation conferred the Padma Shri. When the announcement came, he simply smiled and said to his team, “This belongs to every patient who trusted us and every young doctor who asked a better question.”
Fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, the Indian Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and the Indian National Science Academy, he continued to publish hundreds of papers, train generations of endocrinologists, and push for care that was both scientific and humane.
In 2026, when the director of AIIMS moved to NITI Aayog, the institute turned to him. Padma Shri Dr. Nikhil Tandon, already Dean (Academic) and Head of his department, took interim charge of one of India’s most important medical institutions—still the same quiet, precise, patient-centred physician who had never left the public system.
Today, in the Asian Games Village where he lives, or in the busy wards of AIIMS, you may still find him listening carefully—to a student’s doubt, to a patient’s fear, to the data that might prevent the next generation from suffering what the last could not escape.
From a curious boy in Delhi to a guardian of India’s metabolic health, Nikhil Tandon’s life has been a steady conversation between science and compassion. And in that conversation, countless lives have found clearer answers, stronger hope, and a better tomorrow.
