The Steward of India’s Medical Research

Born in 1941, Nirmal Kumar Ganguly graduated MBBS from R.G. Kar Medical College in Kolkata and earned his MD in Microbiology from the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. He later served as Acting Director of that same institute and went on to hold leadership roles at the National Institute of Biologicals and as President of the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER).

From 1998 to 2007 he steered the Indian Council of Medical Research as Director General, guiding national programmes on tropical diseases, diarrhoeal illnesses, cardiovascular research and vaccine policy. Under his watch ICMR strengthened laboratories, expanded clinical trials and shaped India’s National Vaccine Policy. He published more than 775 research papers, supervised over 130 doctoral theses, and remained an active voice in immunology, biotechnology and public health long after formal retirement.

An elected Fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences and of several international academies, he served as President of the Indian Science Congress Association and of numerous scientific societies. His contributions earned more than a hundred national and international awards. In 2008 the Government of India conferred the Padma Bhushan upon him for his services to medicine.

Today, as a Visiting Professor of Eminence and senior advisor to research foundations, Prof. Nirmal Kumar Ganguly continues to counsel policy makers and young scientists. In the laboratories and policy rooms where India’s response to infectious disease is planned, the steady, evidence-driven leadership he provided for decades still guides the way.
