The Endocrinologist Who Turned Academic Excellence into Care for Millions: The Story of Dr. Shashank R. Joshi

In Mumbai, a city of relentless energy, Shashank R. Joshi built a career marked by quiet brilliance and tireless service. An endocrinologist, diabetologist and medical researcher, he has spent decades helping people manage the invisible burdens of diabetes, thyroid disorders, obesity and other hormonal imbalances that shape daily life for millions of Indians.

From the beginning his academic path shone. He topped every major medical examination he sat—MBBS from Grant Medical College and the Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals, MD in Internal Medicine from Seth G.S. Medical College and KEM Hospital, and DM in Endocrinology—collecting first ranks and gold medals along the way. Fellowships followed from the American College of Endocrinology, the American College of Physicians, and the Royal Colleges of Physicians in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

He served on the faculty at Grant Medical College and later at Seth G.S. Medical College and KEM Hospital before focusing on clinical practice and research. Today he works as Consultant Endocrine and Metabolic Physician at Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre, Bhatia Hospital and his own Joshi Clinic in Mumbai, while remaining a visiting faculty member at universities in India and abroad. His research output exceeds six hundred publications. He has held leadership roles as President of the Association of Physicians of India, the Endocrine Society of India and the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India, and he played an important part in Maharashtra’s COVID-19 Task Force, helping shape clinical protocols during the pandemic.

In 2012 the American College of Endocrinology named him International Clinician of the Year. In 2014 the Government of India conferred upon him the Padma Shri for his contributions to medicine.

One evening, after a long clinic filled with patients managing lifelong conditions, a young doctor asked him, “Sir, you could have rested on the gold medals and the research papers. What keeps you seeing patients day after day?”

Dr. Shashank R. Joshi answered with the calm of a physician who understands both science and the human cost of chronic disease.

“Hormones are silent until they are not,” he said. “Diabetes, thyroid problems, obesity—they do not announce themselves with drama, yet they shape every meal, every step, every future. If careful medicine, clear explanation and steady support can help a person live fully despite these conditions, then the work is worth every hour. The medals opened doors; the patients keep them open.”

And so the Mumbai-born endocrinologist who topped every examination, who has guided national medical bodies and helped shape diabetes care across India, continues to sit with patients one by one—translating complex science into practical hope, one consultation at a time.
