In the academic city of Pune, a girl named Archana Sharma was born on 16 February 1932 into a family of teachers and scholars. Her father was a professor of chemistry, and the atmosphere of learning shaped her from an early age. She completed her early education in Rajasthan, earned her B.Sc. in Bikaner, and then moved to the University of Calcutta, where she took her M.Sc. in 1951, her Ph.D. in 1955 and her D.Sc. in 1960—becoming only the second woman to receive the higher doctorate from that university.
She specialised in cytogenetics, cell biology and environmental mutagenesis. Working alongside her husband, the distinguished cytologist Arun Kumar Sharma, she developed new staining and pre-treatment techniques that made the study of chromosomes clearer and more precise. These methods became standard tools in laboratories around the world. Her research ranged from the speciation of plants that reproduce without seeds to the effects of environmental toxins such as arsenic on human cells. She helped establish the Centre of Advanced Studies in Cell and Chromosome Research at the University of Calcutta and trained generations of students who later occupied important positions in India and abroad.
One of her research colleagues once asked her why she devoted so much time to the painstaking work of chromosome analysis when faster results might have brought quicker recognition.
She answered with quiet conviction, “If we do not understand the structure of life at its most basic level, we cannot protect it. Precision is not a luxury—it is a responsibility.”
Her contributions were widely recognised. She received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, the J.C. Bose Award, the Birbal Sahni Medal and many others. In 1984 the Government of India awarded her the Padma Bhushan. She also served as President of the Indian Science Congress and was elected to the major national science academies.
Professor Archana Sharma passed away on 14 January 2008. In the history of Indian science she remains remembered as a pioneering cytogeneticist whose careful work advanced both plant and human genetics and whose teaching built lasting institutions of research and learning.
