Dr. Amrit Kaur Tewari (also known as Amrit Tewari; 5 September 1938 – 13 January 2018) was a pioneering Indian paediatric dentist and dental academic. She served as Dean of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, and as Head of its Oral Health Sciences Centre. The Government of India awarded her the Padma Shri in 1992.

Born on 5 September 1938 in Chandigarh, she was the daughter of Sardar Tirath Singh, a minister in the erstwhile PEPSU state. She specialised in paediatric and preventive dentistry and rose to become one of the leading figures in dental education and public oral-health policy in India.

At PGIMER she built and led the Oral Health Sciences Centre, training generations of dentists. She was the first person selected as a Life Member of the Indian Society of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry (ISPPD) and a Fellow of both the Indian Dental Association and the National Academy of Medical Sciences. She served as President of the Indian Dental Association (1984–85) and was a member of the WHO Expert Advisory Panel on Oral Health for many years.

Dr. Tewari played a key role in drafting India’s National Oral Health Policy (1985) and conducted the National Epidemiological Study of Oral Diseases (1985–1988). She authored numerous scientific papers and the book Fluorides and Dental Caries: A Compendium. After retiring from PGIMER she was appointed Professor Emeritus. She also served as a nominated councillor of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.

She was married to Professor V.N. Tewari, a noted Punjabi scholar who was assassinated in 1984. Their son, Manish Tewari, later became a Union Minister.

Colleagues remembered her as both warm and exacting. “Oral health is the foundation of overall health,” she would tell her students. “If we neglect the mouths of children, we neglect their future.”

Dr. Amrit Tewari passed away on 13 January 2018 in Chandigarh following a cardiac arrest. She is remembered as a trailblazer in paediatric dentistry, a builder of academic institutions, and a strong advocate for preventive oral health in India.
