In the high-pressure world of cardiac catheterisation labs, where every second can mean the difference between life and renewed hope, Dr. Ashok Seth has spent more than four decades refining the art of healing hearts without major surgery. Born on 12 October 1954, he graduated from Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh, and went on to earn fellowships from the Royal Colleges of Physicians of London, Edinburgh and Ireland—becoming one of the youngest overseas doctors to achieve that distinction.

Over a career that has taken him to the forefront of interventional cardiology, Seth has performed more than 50,000 angiograms and 20,000 angioplasties, a volume recognised in the Limca Book of Records. He pioneered numerous techniques in India and the Asia-Pacific region: directional atherectomy, angioscopy, drug-eluting stents, bioabsorbable stents, Impella heart-support devices, thrombectomy systems and transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). “Technology is only as good as the hands and heart that guide it,” he often tells the young cardiologists he mentors. “Our goal is always to give the patient the least invasive path back to a full life.”

As Chairman of Fortis Escorts Heart Institute and of the Cardiology Council of Fortis Healthcare, he has trained hundreds of specialists from India and abroad, founded major teaching courses such as India Live, and contributed more than 250 scientific publications. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 2003 and the Padma Bhushan in 2015; Spain awarded him the Order of Isabella the Catholic; and he has received the B.C. Roy National Award along with dozens of other national and international recognitions.
