Dr. Ernest Joachim Joseph Borges
The pioneering cancer surgeon who gave hope when few dared to operate

Ernest Joachim Joseph Borges was born in 1909 in Bombay into a Goan family with roots in Ucassaim. He studied at St. Xavier’s and graduated from Grant Medical College, later earning his MS from the University of Bombay with distinction. After early surgical experience, including time as a civil surgeon in Ahmednagar, he joined the newly established Tata Memorial Hospital in Parel. There he would spend nearly three decades, becoming one of the foremost cancer surgeons in India.

In an era when radiation and chemotherapy were still rudimentary and major cancer surgery was attempted by very few, Borges specialised in complex procedures, particularly operations for oesophageal cancer. His skill, calm under pressure and meticulous technique earned him national and international respect. Patients travelled from across the country to place their lives in his hands. He rose to become Chief Surgeon and, in the final years of his life, Director and Superintendent of Tata Memorial Hospital (1967–1969).

Colleagues and patients remembered a surgeon of rare dedication and quiet humanity. One junior doctor, watching him complete a long and difficult resection late into the night, later recalled Borges saying gently:

“The patient has already fought a hard battle to reach this table. Our only task is to give him the best chance we can.”

In 1966 the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri. The Vatican also honoured him with the Order of St. Gregory the Great and the title of Privy Chamberlain. Married to Gracie Soares in 1946, he was a devoted family man whose children later distinguished themselves in medicine and science.

Ironically, the disease he had spent his life fighting claimed him. He died of stomach cancer on 3 March 1969 at the very hospital he had served so faithfully. A road outside Tata Memorial Hospital now bears his name.

In the story of Indian doctors, Ernest Borges stands as a quiet giant of surgical oncology — the surgeon who, when few others would attempt the most demanding operations, offered skill, courage and compassion, and helped lay the foundations of modern cancer care in India.
