Dr. Ram Kumar Caroli

In the corridors of Willingdon Hospital—later renamed Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital—in New Delhi, patients and colleagues alike knew they could trust the calm, precise judgment of Dr. Ram Kumar Caroli. Born in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, he completed his medical training and earned an MD from King George’s Medical College, Lucknow, before joining the hospital in 1953. Over the decades he rose to become Head of the Department of Cardiology, helping shape cardiac care at one of the capital’s key public institutions.

Caroli’s reputation extended far beyond routine hospital work. He served as personal physician to four Presidents of India and was the cardiologist who looked after Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Lal Bahadur Shastri. In an era when specialised cardiac facilities were still developing in the country, his steady presence at the highest levels of national life brought both clinical skill and quiet reassurance.

Even when he held administrative responsibilities as Medical Superintendent, he continued to sit in the OPD. One junior doctor, watching him examine a long queue of patients late into the evening, once asked why he still took such personal interest in ordinary cases.
Caroli replied with a gentle smile, “The heart does not distinguish between a prime minister and a clerk from the bazaar. Both deserve the same careful attention.”

He was a Fellow of the Cardiology Society of India and remained deeply committed to ethical, accessible care in a public hospital setting. The Government of India recognised his contributions with the Padma Shri in 1969 and the higher honour of the Padma Bhushan in 1974.

Colleagues remembered him as a doctor who combined clinical excellence with humility—someone who had treated the nation’s leaders yet never lost the habit of listening carefully to every patient who walked through his door. Dr. Ram Kumar Caroli passed away on 2 February 2023, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated cardiac service that helped define an important chapter in Delhi’s medical history.
