Dr. Stanley John
(Padma Shri, 1975 – Medicine)

In the early 1960s, when open-heart surgery was still a rare and high-risk adventure in India, a young surgeon at Christian Medical College, Vellore, helped turn it into a regular, reliable service. Dr. Stanley John, born in August 1932 in Munnar, Tamil Nadu, became one of the true pioneers of cardiothoracic surgery in the country.

He began his medical training at CMC Vellore in 1950. After general surgery he joined the thoracic unit and was part of the team that performed India’s first open-heart operation in 1961. Further training in the United States under Walton Lillehei refined his skills. Returning in 1967, he was appointed Head of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery—a post he held with distinction for a quarter of a century.

Under his leadership CMC became the first centre in India to conduct open-heart surgery on a regular basis. He performed the country’s first surgical repairs of Ebstein’s anomaly, ruptured sinus of Valsalva and double-outlet right ventricle. His series of closed mitral valvotomies ran into thousands, and he established reliable techniques for tetralogy of Fallot repair. More than seventy cardiac surgeons trained under him, many of whom went on to lead departments across India and abroad.

Colleagues remembered a surgeon who often slept in the ward after major operations so that he could check on his patients himself. One junior once asked why he drove himself so hard.
Stanley John replied quietly, “The heart is a gift. When we open it, we hold a life in our hands. Anything less than our complete attention is not enough.”

He received the Padma Shri in 1975 and the Dr. B.C. Roy Award in 1985. He served as President of the Indian Association of Cardiovascular-Thoracic Surgeons (1982–83), was elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, and acted as Honorary Surgeon to the President of India. Later he continued his work at Yellamma Dasappa Hospital in Bengaluru.

Married to Dr. Lily John, a professor of medicine at CMC, he was the father of two sons who also entered medicine. Dr. Stanley John passed away on 23 February 2020 in Bengaluru at the age of eighty-seven. He left behind a generation of cardiac surgeons and a legacy of meticulous, compassionate care that helped establish modern heart surgery in India.
