Hakim Saifuddin Ahmad

In the rich tradition of Unani medicine in India, Hakim Saifuddin Ahmad of Uttar Pradesh stood as a respected practitioner whose lifelong service earned national recognition. In 1976 the Government of India conferred upon him the Padma Shri for distinguished contributions to the field of medicine, specifically the Unani system of healing.

Born and trained in the classical Unani tradition, he devoted his professional life to the care of patients through the time-honoured principles of humoral balance, herbal remedies and holistic treatment. Practising in Uttar Pradesh during the decades after Independence, he belonged to a generation of hakims who combined deep knowledge of traditional texts with a practical commitment to the everyday health needs of ordinary people.

Colleagues and patients of that era remembered hakims who sat patiently with those who came seeking relief, listening carefully and prescribing according to both classical wisdom and individual constitution. One younger practitioner who had observed his work later recalled a quiet conversation after a long clinic. When asked how he maintained compassion through endless days of consultation, the Hakim is said to have replied, “The body speaks through its imbalance. Our duty is to listen with respect and restore harmony with the means that nature and our tradition have given us.”

His sustained service to Unani medicine and to the health of the people of Uttar Pradesh was acknowledged when he received the Padma Shri in 1976. The award recognised not only technical mastery of the Unani system but the quieter, consistent labour of healing that improved countless lives.
