In the quiet coastal stretches of Kerala, a boy named Narayana Panicker Kochupillai grew up with a quiet curiosity about the hidden workings of the human body. Born on 10 February 1939, he completed a science degree at the University of Kerala before making his way to the newly established All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi. There he earned his MBBS and MD, and later travelled to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York to train in immunoassay techniques under the Nobel laureate Rosalyn Yalow.
Returning to AIIMS, he joined the faculty and rose to become Head of the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism. His life’s work centred on the silent epidemic of iodine deficiency that plagued large parts of India, especially the sub-Himalayan belt. Through meticulous field studies and laboratory research he showed how lack of iodine not only caused goitre and cretinism but also impaired brain development and lowered intelligence in children. “A nation’s future rests on the thyroid of its newborns,” he would tell colleagues and policymakers. His findings helped shape India’s National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Control Programme and brought universal salt iodisation into public-health practice.
Kochupillai served as President of the Endocrine Society of India, became an Emeritus Professor of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, and later directed medical research at M.S. Ramaiah Medical College in Bengaluru. He was elected Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, the Indian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medical Sciences. Among many honours he received the Ranbaxy International Award, the Dr B.C. Roy Award in 2002, and the Padma Shri in 2003.
On 26 February 2024, at the age of 85, Narayana Panicker Kochupillai passed away in Bengaluru. Generations of endocrinologists remember him as a teacher of rare clarity and a scientist who never lost sight of the ordinary people whose health he sought to protect. From a Kerala classroom to the laboratories of AIIMS and the policy tables of the nation, his journey remains a quiet testament to the power of patient, evidence-based medicine.
