In the districts of Bihar, a boy named Shishupal Ram was born into a family that valued education and service. He grew up in Bhagalpur and later moved to Patna for his medical studies, graduating from the prestigious Patna Medical College. From those formative years he chose the care of children as his life’s work and became one of Bihar’s most respected paediatricians.

In an era when specialised child health services were still limited in many parts of the state, Dr. Ram dedicated himself to the diagnosis and treatment of the illnesses that affected the youngest patients. He practised with a quiet diligence that earned the trust of families across the region. Colleagues remembered a physician who combined clinical skill with genuine concern for the welfare of every child who came under his care.

One younger doctor once asked him why he continued to see so many ordinary patients long after recognition had come his way.

Dr. Ram answered simply, “A child’s illness does not wait for convenience. If we can ease suffering, that is the only measure that matters.”

His contributions to paediatrics in Bihar were recognised by the nation. In 1983 the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri. The honour acknowledged both his professional excellence and his long service to the children of his state.

Dr. Shishupal Ram passed away on 29 October 2011 in Patna at the age of eighty-four, after a prolonged illness. In the medical history of Bihar he remains remembered as a pioneering paediatrician whose steady work helped strengthen the care of children at a time when such specialised attention was still taking root.
