The Eternal Healer of Kottakkal
A story of Padma Bhushan Dr. P. K. Warrier

In the green heart of Kottakkal, Kerala, on 5 June 1921, a boy named Panniyampilly Krishnankuty Warrier was born into a family already dedicated to the ancient science of Ayurveda. His uncle, Vaidyaratnam P. S. Varier, had founded the Arya Vaidya Sala. Young Krishnankuty grew up among medicinal herbs, the scent of oils, and the quiet wisdom of traditional healing.

As a student he was drawn for a time to the freedom struggle and the Quit India movement, leaving his formal studies. Yet the call of Ayurveda proved stronger. He returned, trained under his uncle, and in 1954, after family tragedy, took charge of the Arya Vaidya Sala as Managing Trustee and Chief Physician while still a young man.

One evening a visitor asked him, “Why stay with the old ways when modern medicine is advancing so quickly?”

Warrier answered with a gentle smile, “The old ways are not old if they still heal. Our duty is to keep them pure, make them available, and prove their strength with science.”

For nearly seven decades he guided the institution. Under his leadership the Arya Vaidya Sala grew from a modest local pharmacy into an internationally respected centre for treatment, research, education and medicine manufacturing. He modernised production while protecting classical formulations, established research laboratories for medicinal plants, treated patients from every walk of life—including presidents and prime ministers—and insisted that the poorest receive the same care as the powerful.

He wrote, taught, and lived the principles he practised. In 1999 the nation awarded him the Padma Shri; in 2010 the Padma Bhushan followed. When admirers called him a legend he only said, “I am still a student of the herbs and of the patients who teach me every day.”

On 10 July 2021, one month after his hundredth birthday, Dr. P. K. Warrier passed away in Kottakkal. Yet the institutions he nurtured and the thousands of lives he touched continue his quiet promise:

“Heal with knowledge. Serve with humility. And let the wisdom of Ayurveda remain a living gift for every generation.”
