The Pulse of an Ancient Lineage
A story of Padma Bhushan Vaidya Devendra Triguna

In a family where the art of healing had been passed down through generations, Devendra Triguna was born into the living tradition of Ayurveda. His father, the legendary Vaidya Brihaspati Dev Triguna—later honoured with the Padma Vibhushan—was a master of Nadi Pariksha, the subtle science of pulse diagnosis. From childhood Devendra sat beside him in the modest clinic at Sarai Kale Khan on the edge of Delhi, learning to listen not only with his ears but with his fingertips.

One afternoon the young man asked his father, “Pitaji, how can a single pulse tell so many stories?”

The elder Triguna placed his son’s fingers gently on a patient’s wrist. “Because the body never lies. The pulse is the river that carries every secret of health and imbalance. Learn to hear it with respect, and you will never need to guess.”

Devendra devoted his life to that listening. Over decades of clinical practice he treated chronic and complex conditions—blood disorders, kidney ailments, skin diseases, spondylitis, asthma, arthritis, insomnia and hypertension—often succeeding where other approaches had reached their limits. He became Honorary Physician to the President of India, President of the All India Ayurvedic Congress, and a guiding voice for the Association of Manufacturers of Ayurvedic Medicine.

In 1999 the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri. A decade later, in 2009, came the Padma Bhushan. When well-wishers congratulated him he only said, “These honours belong to my father, to the lineage, and to every patient who trusted the ancient knowledge with their life.”

Today Vaidya Devendra Triguna continues the work in the same spirit: calm, precise, and deeply rooted in the belief that true healing begins with attentive presence. Those who sit before him still hear the quiet conviction he inherited and made his own:

“Feel the pulse carefully. Treat the whole person. And let the wisdom of Ayurveda remain a living gift for every generation.”
