In the early years of independent India, a young man named Immaneni Sathyamurthy chose the path of medicine. He earned his MBBS from Aurangabad Medical College in 1972, his MD in General Medicine in 1975, and his DM in Cardiology from Delhi University in 1981. After teaching at Christian Medical College, Vellore, he joined Apollo Hospitals in Chennai in 1984 and eventually became Director of the Department of Cardiology.

He specialised in interventional cardiology—the delicate art of opening blocked arteries and repairing hearts without open surgery. Over four decades he performed thousands of procedures, published more than two hundred research papers, and trained generations of young cardiologists. From 1993 to 2002 he also served as Honorary Cardiologist to President K. R. Narayanan.

One evening a junior colleague asked him, “Sir, after so many years in the cath lab, what still drives you?”

Sathyamurthy answered quietly, “Every heart that beats again is a second chance given to someone’s family. That is reason enough to keep learning and keep working.”

In 2000 the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri. The following year he received the Dr. B. C. Roy National Award for his contributions to the specialty of cardiology. Further honours followed—the TANSA Award, Best Doctor Award, and Lifetime Achievement recognition from the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University.

When admirers listed his titles and fellowships he only said, “The real recognition is the patient who walks out of the hospital with a stronger heartbeat and renewed hope.”

Today Padma Shri Dr. I. Sathyamurthy continues to practise and teach with the same calm dedication, guided by a simple belief:

“Treat the heart with skill. Treat the person with kindness. And never forget that every successful procedure is a life restored.”
