The Visionary Who Gave Sight to Millions
A story of Padma Bhushan Dr. S. S. Badrinath

In Triplicane, Madras, on 24 February 1940, a boy named Sengamedu Srinivasa Badrinath was born. Even as a child he was drawn to the quiet miracle of sight. After graduating from Madras Medical College he travelled to the United States, training in ophthalmology and completing a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery under the legendary Charles Schepens at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston.

He could have stayed abroad and built a prosperous practice. Instead he returned to India. One evening a senior colleague asked him, “Why leave the comfort of America for the uncertainties here?”

Badrinath answered simply, “Because the eyes that cannot see in my own country need me more.”

In 1978, inspired by the call of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham to serve the poor, he founded Sankara Nethralaya in Chennai—a charitable eye hospital dedicated to high-quality care for every patient, regardless of their ability to pay. What began as a modest institution grew into one of India’s largest and most respected centres for eye care, research and training, with mobile surgical vans reaching remote villages and tele-ophthalmology bringing specialists to the doorstep of the underserved.

He performed countless intricate vitreoretinal surgeries, trained generations of ophthalmologists, and insisted that excellence and compassion must walk together. When young doctors expressed frustration at the long hours, he would say gently, “Every eye you restore is a life given back its colours. That is reward enough.”

The nation honoured him with the Padma Shri in 1983 and the Padma Bhushan in 1999, along with the Dr. B. C. Roy Award and many other distinctions. Yet he remained the same quiet, disciplined man who measured success not by awards but by the number of people who could once again see the faces of their loved ones.

On 21 November 2023, at the age of eighty-three, Dr. S. S. Badrinath passed away in Chennai. But the light he kindled continues to shine in every patient who walks out of Sankara Nethralaya with clearer vision and in every doctor who carries forward his simple creed:

“Serve with skill. Serve with humility. And never forget that sight is a gift meant for all.”
