The young doctor stood before a grainy black-and-white image on the screen.

“This is the future,” he told his colleagues at the Medical College Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram in the late 1970s. “If we can see the heart beating in real time, we can diagnose without opening the chest. India must not lag behind.”

That vision led Dr. G. Vijayaraghavan to establish India’s first two-dimensional echocardiography laboratory around 1980. The technology he helped introduce and popularise would go on to transform cardiology across the country.


Born on 18 September 1942 in Perumpuzha, Kollam, Kerala, into a family that valued learning—his father was the Sanskrit scholar Sahithya Siromany M.K. Govindan—young Vijayaraghavan studied at Trivandrum Model School. He graduated in medicine (MBBS, 1964) and completed his MD in General Medicine (1969) from Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram. He then specialised in Cardiology, earning his DM from Christian Medical College, Vellore, in 1973—among the earliest DM cardiologists in India—and began as an associate professor there.

In 1976 he returned to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. There he conducted important research on Endomyocardial Fibrosis (EMF), a restrictive cardiomyopathy that was then common in Kerala, collaborating with institutions in London. He also studied the cardiac effects of plant poisons used in suicides in South India and helped develop better treatment approaches.

As Professor and Head of Cardiology he built one of the most modern cardiology departments in the country. With support from the World Health Organization and the Government of India, he demonstrated the high prevalence of heart attacks and risk factors even among poorer sections of Kerala society—challenging the notion that coronary disease was mainly a disease of the affluent.

His greatest technical contribution was the introduction and widespread teaching of two-dimensional echocardiography. Through continuous medical education programmes across India in the 1980s, he helped make 2D echo the standard non-invasive investigation it is today. He later worked on Doppler echocardiography, including a research stint at the University of California, Los Angeles, and co-authored one of the early practical books on the subject.

He went on to become Vice-Chairman and Founder Director of the Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in Thiruvananthapuram and President of the Society for Continuing Medical Education and Research. He has held leadership roles in the Indian Academy of Echocardiography, Cardiological Society of India (Kerala Chapter) and other bodies, and has received Lifetime Achievement Awards from major cardiology organisations in India. Internationally he was honoured with fellowships from the Royal College of Physicians (London and Edinburgh), the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association’s Golden Heart Fellowship.

In 2009 the Government of India conferred the Padma Shri on him for his contributions to medical science.

Even after decades at the forefront of Indian cardiology, Dr. Vijayaraghavan remains known for his clarity as a teacher and his insistence that advanced technology must reach ordinary patients.

“An echo machine is useful only if the doctor knows how to interpret what the heart is saying,” he often reminds younger colleagues. “Technology without understanding is noise. Understanding without compassion is incomplete.”

From a small laboratory in Thiruvananthapuram to lecture halls across India and beyond, Dr. G. Vijayaraghavan helped Indian cardiology see the beating heart more clearly—and treat it with greater precision and care.
