The Lord from Lucknow

Born on 1 July 1941 in Lucknow, India, Khalid Hameed graduated in medicine from Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial Medical College, Kanpur (University of Lucknow). He later moved to the United Kingdom, where he worked in leading London teaching hospitals before establishing a successful private practice in Central London.

He rose to become Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the prestigious Cromwell Hospital, transforming it into one of London’s foremost private medical centres. He later founded and chairs the Alpha Hospital Group and serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the London International Hospital, a centre of excellence focused on cancer, heart and brain care.

Beyond clinical leadership, he has dedicated himself to interfaith harmony and community service. He chairs the Woolf Institute of Abrahamic Faiths, the Commonwealth Youth Exchange Council and the Friends of the British Library, and serves as a trustee of several charitable foundations. For his work promoting Christian-Muslim-Jewish relations he received the Sternberg Award and the Ambassador for Peace Award.

In 2006 Her Majesty the Queen appointed him the first Asian High Sheriff of Greater London. The following year he was made a life peer, taking his seat in the House of Lords as Baron Hameed of Hampstead, sitting as a Crossbencher. He was appointed CBE in 2004 and Deputy Lieutenant of Greater London.

The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 1992 and the Padma Bhushan in 2009 for his contributions to medicine and to strengthening India-UK ties. He has also received high civilian awards from Pakistan.

Today, as a member of the House of Lords and a leading figure in British healthcare and interfaith dialogue, Lord Khalid Hameed continues to bridge continents and communities. In the hospitals he has led and in the causes of understanding he champions, the quiet determination of the doctor from Lucknow endures—healing bodies, building bridges, and serving humanity with dignity and grace.
